fair warning, i’m asking about the shootings. nothing too deep but I figured it needs a buffer.
in both of the videos, once the guy was clearly not getting back up, but still alive, the officers did not try to help. Whats up with that?

Man after a less than stellar 2015, I was really hoping 2016 would turn out better. We’re only half way through and it’s already worse. On the bright side and thanks to Brexit, 2017-2020 will no doubt be worse. Sigh.

For lack of a better way of describing it, its easier to get away with it if the other side can’t tell their story. Or it could be some level of shock.

Based on what I’ve heard, it sounds like the MN cop may have been in shock, but the LA cops were probably not wanting the other side of the story to get out.

If that story is true (he was just reaching for a wallet) then I could see him being in shock. I want to know if it went down the way the woman explained it in the facebook video thing.

Well, we will never know for sure, but based on the character descriptions, the lack of criminal history, and the fact that his fiancee and her daughter were in the car it seems unlikely that he was reaching for his weapon. Honestly if the cop was that on edge, he should have had him exit the car with his hands up, removed the weapon himself, then had him get his wallet out. Were I someone that carried on a regular basis, I would consider that to be a prudent move by the officer.

Well, as I was told at a CWP class, don’t approach unless you know they’re dead. But, that is for citizens, not cops.

I’m not seeing how there is a certainty that the next 3 years will be worse, and that it would be attributable to that one referendum.

As of now, I have zero faith in any of the political parties in the UK. My biggest fear about voting leave was the lack of a plan about what to do next. This fear was immediately realised and is even worse than I imagined because of all the leadership issues going on.
So with all the chaos in politics going on what’s gonna happen? They’ll do what they always do when shit is going wrong. Cuts. Cuts. Cuts. Oh but the private sector will pick up the strain they say. You mean the private sector which recently took a hammering due to the referendum. The one where numerous big players are planning to move abroad. The one who has been kneecapped because import prices have shot up overnight.
Look, I’m no fan of the EU but now wasn’t the time to jump ship and these next few years are gonna suck and to think, they only just stopped sucking.

Thanks for that! I haven’t really seen a sensible perspective on the individual level yet. It’s one thing to be in the U.S. where there still may be a shot at a more autonomous economy and the effects of a trade organization are so tangible, but another to be in a smaller country that has entered what is a symbiotic (even if in some ways parasitic) relationship with a much larger group in a much bigger way.
I think many of the the ship sailed on many of the problems people are trying to solve with it. I can understand the frustration on jobs seemingly blow out of the country with the winds of global oligarchy and the exchange of money to... shall we say, conservative countries? And a large influx of people from those cultures. Honestly the prospects for England—and I’m sorry to say it—just aren’t fantastic and people want to jump over to the other side whether they can see the grass or not. I must say it’s probably satisfying for many in the moment, though, taking hold of the future the way they wish they had with the reigns of democracy. Hard to blame widespread reactionary behavior on both sides.

There is some possible ambiguity about whether or not Alton Sterling was reaching for a gun (he definitely had one on him, but SOMEHOW there’s no clear footage) but the policemen’s use of force (i.e. SHOOTING HIM IN THE CHEST 6 TIMES) was a horrible overreaction at best, and criminal at worst. I find it extremely suspect that two police officers had no other option than to kill a man they had completely pinned down on the ground. And their shady behavior afterwards made a bad situation even worse. Confiscating security camera footage and two bodycams that mysteriously “fell off.” From the video, the cop who shot Philando Castile definitely knew he fucked up immediately. Although he was 100% at fault, either for being unreasonably jumpy in a situation that shouldn’t have been tense at all, or for not issuing clear instructions to Philando Castile and de-escalating the situation. And again his use of force was completely inappropriate.

yeah, there is a little bit of ambiguity with Alton Sterling, and it is, however remote, the possibility that he was actually posing a danger to the officers attempting to restrain him. Additionally, had he not escalated the encounter by resisting(and he was resisting) he might have gotten out unscathed. HOWEVER, it was almost certainly a massive overreaction to shot him like that and I am no way blaming him for his own death. That situation is the perfect time to deploy a taser, not a bullet.
Castile on the other hand was, by all accounts we’ve heard thus far, a fuckup of epic proportions by the officer. He was apparently compliant and did everything right, but got shot because of the officers jumpy trigger finger.
Both are tragic, no doubt, but Castile is even moreso due to the circumstances.

I was in America several years ago and before going bought a guide book.
It advised that if ever you were stopped by the police you should keep your hands in view and not reach for anything unless you first told the cop what you were doing and what you were reaching for.
Now we see why.
Meanwhile, I live in a place with a police force that isn’t routinely armed so we don’t have this kind of thing.
