mmm. Lookit that turbo goodness :D
Got the wiring harness extended for the vane airflow meter using eight wires. Blue and blue with a white stripe. Hell yes.
The Kansas heat made my mirrors start to fall off so I bolted those bastards to the door. Probably gonna get some CF miata-specific ones later ‘cuz these generic things don’t even come close to fitting.
Went for a five-odd mile drive. Makes fun noises. Lack of a blowoff valve means there’s lots of very entertaining squirrel noises when I lift to shift. Blows my mind how well this handles on the 430/370 or whatever springs I have on here now. Zoom zoom, indeed. The engine runs better with this turbo than it ever did in the past. Not sure why. Perhaps the copious amounts of oil I sucked through the engine or the 2psi of positive crankcase pressure I accidentally applied somehow cleaned it out? Either way, it starts right up and immediately settles into a perfect idle and runs like a dream save for a nasty exhaust rattle at 5000rpm due to my inability to get my stupid midpipe flange bolts to stay in place. Need more loctite, evidently.
Mocking up my center stack. Going to have a Lepai 2020a+ just so I can listen to something other than wind noise, even if it sounds like crap. Below that will be the boost gauge, air fuel gauge, and the window switch, in that order.

I’m digging the dragonball shifter! How are you handling the engine management? I may have asked you this question already...
Get on that blowoff valve! You don’t want too much pressure backing up against that turbine while it’s trying to spin air in the opposite direction. But I bet it sounds sweet, like anti-lag on a rally car...
Are you running an intercooler?
From the pics, I can’t tell if you just replaced the PCV with a vent or not. If you just replaced the PCV with a vent, ignore the rest of this paragraph. I recommend an oil catch can. It’s a relatively cheap longevity mod. As you know, you’ll be getting positive crankcase pressure on boost sometimes, and it’s a better idea to let the oil spit out by the PCV into a catch can instead of back into your intake manifold... recommend Moroso, they’re very reliable and installation is a piece of cake. My Miata is naturally aspirated, but at 184K miles I’m bound to get some blow-by through the valves and oil will get spit out into the PCV. It’s nice seeing my catch can fill up (slowly) with oil knowing that I’m keeping that oil from getting spit back into my intake manifold like a normal PCV would. The car runs a bit better because of it too.

Holy crap...when did you put a turbo in this?

EMS is a rising rate FPU. I don’t make more than 5PSI or 6-ish so it’s more than adequate. I have a narrowband O2 gauge to make sure it doesn’t lean out under boost.
I might. I might not. There are some very high-profile tuners who suggest a blowoff valve may not be as necessary as traditionally thought.
No intercooler. Going to convert to E85 though.
Yes, it’s just vented.

Yeah. I need to. Some people say it’s not necessary but the SOUNDS.

Quite a while back but I kept it quiet until recently when I wrote the two articles below.

That details most of the drivetrain modifications.
THE CRAPCAN MIATA PART 2 — I PREFER DUCK SAUCE
This details the rice.

Yup, might as well vent and get rid of the PCV system altogether.
Nice nice. A FPR should be fine for that amount of boost. E85 should cool things down to compensate for no intercooler. And BEGI’s first turbo kit for a Miata didn’t have an intercooler, those seemed to work just fine.
I’d like to hear more info about how some high profile guys don’t think a BOV is necessary, that sounds interesting.

I’m basically making the choo-choo equivalent of the old 90s supercharger systems. 6PSI, no intercooler, a fuel pressure regulator, and some well wishes. People would put hundreds of thousands of miles on those things without an issue.

Cool! I remember lots of old supercharger systems not having intercoolers. I’m very interested to see how this sucker drives. If I were you (which I’m not, so you probably know better), I’d consider a wideband O2 sensor & gauge, just to get a more precise reading of your AFR’s. Just a thought. Used widebands aren’t too expensive either, but you’ll need to weld a new bung.
I love seeing Miatas turbo’ed like this- on the cheap. I spent way too much time planning my turbo build over on miataturbo.net with all those megasquirt worshippers. Nothing against MS, the MSPNP unit is a godsend- for people who can afford it. My turbo build never came to fruition because of $$ issues and emissions test worries. “Old school” turbo’ing like your setup is really cool.
First chance you get, hit us with a driving video! I wanna hear it!!

Miataturbo.net is cancer. I hate that place with a burning passion and their “LOL GOTTA PAY TO PLAY!!!111 NO BANDAINDS!” harping on is the antithesis of a cheap low-power build like I enjoy doing.
Because poor.
I am looking at widebands, though.
