How are they even making money with deals like this?!
Found this at work (part of the job is to change all the deal tickets) shows the silliness of retail.

My personal favourite was changing the price tags on items and having customers come up in the process, then argue about the prices.

Making sure to save at least 0% on all items will let you retire on the octeenth of never!

I feel for you, man. Worked in retail for a while, never again. Working with offenders in the criminal justice system was usually easier than working with customers.

Damn Brexit, ruining everyone's savings. Those Norwegian imports don't pay for themselves.

We had some Thorntons chocolates deleted from sale. We had loads of the damned things so the practice is to crash mark them down to get rid of them. They were originally £8.00. They marked them down (baring in mind, crash mark down) to £7.75. I work with idiots after a week of me calling the managers feckless wonders, they marked them down to £3.00 and they almost flew off the shelf making space for other products.
My bosses couldn’t run a bath, never mind a store.

Lol. I went the other way. Worked a while for the probation service and got threatened once with a shotgun. I didn’t think anything of it till I spoke to the guy’s probation officer and he told me he had been away for armed robbery of a post office.
So dealing with customers is borderline. Managers however are a different story.

Hah, never got threatened, although I did have one intake that got rather heated. I guess it depends on where you are.

Well, to be fair, £8.99 today is a lot less than £8.99 two weeks ago.

Didnt know you were in retail. But aye the offices that do our sales plans are idiots. It isnt done at store level so for once managment arent to blame (to be fair we have one good assistant manager then a rubbish head manager). The prices in our store are usually terrible anyway, I wouldnt shop there.

We had a basic skills tutor come in to teach them some basic written work.
I was asked as I had some free time to grade some of the work and the guy took umbrage with me for marking something that wasn’t correct as not correct. Lol.

Even though most of the younger generation didn’t cause this, the Brits do have it coming. No offence meant to you personally, obviously.
Don’t worry though. Give it a little bit of time and a large part of the population of a random other country will f up and they’ll take your place in being on the receiving end of a lot of jokes.

My biggest gripe is that the people who are responsible for all our sale signs and tags tend to miss pulling down a lot of expired ones after the weekly ad change. That means these items are now scanning a different price than what the shelf tag says and due to state law we have to give the customer the item for free.

I’m not allowed to mention the store name as the U.S. head office takes any derogatory mention of them serious but the company name rhymes with Mazda. Lol. Been there a few years on nights. It pays the bills so I can clean cars during the day.
By all accounts it’s not just our managers, it’s other stores and even the depot transport division are the same.

I believe the next class they were took on was hygiene.
I was an administrator for the probation service but would do other stuff if I wasn’t busy to break the time up.

Haha I dont think ive written down where i work but a few oppos at least know. I doubt theyd find this post anyway, they wouldnt be able to work kinja.
I can respect that, same reason ive worked here for the better part of a year, gotta earn a wage. The only reason i really wanted to leave is im not on a full time contract so i cant move out of my parents place. I often work long hours but its not stable enough to make rent.
In my experience theres stupidity top to bottom in most retail companies.

Here in the U.K. we have to give it to them for the lowest indicated price. If the item is way off them we would withdraw the item from the shop floor for 24 hours and then correct it, but it was easier to take the sale price off, mark down the product at the till and correct the sale ticket.

Cool, cool. I worked for an NGO that managed community service hours for offenders. It was a pretty fun job. I take it the shotgun incident is what made you leave?

BTW, red/white/blue...I'm guessing Tesco? It's been a while since I've perused Britain's retail landscape, but since you've got one on every street corner, it's at least a 50/50 guess, right?

Back in 1999, I was studying down in Plymouth and learned way too much about fragrances and retail there (and walking the floors of Boots, Tesco, Sainsbury's, etc). I've always heard about Tesco coming to the US, but haven't seen one yet...our chemists/drugstores are VERY competitive with our existing behemoths called Walgreens, CVS, and Rite-Aid. It's almost impossible to compete.

I hope you bought hundreds of these at the discounted price to sell on at full retail and reap all dem profits!
I have to say I don’t miss retail, spent 3 years working in a shop that rhymes with Malfords. What a faff that shit was.

Yeah retail takes it out of you for sure. I havent totally hated it, met some good people and occasionally the work is good, plus it was the only job i could get at the time. But the shitty customers and the being treated like a child sometimes sucks. Retail work can be very condescending.

Yeah thats the truth. I worked in the Bike department, and I kinda like bikes so it wasnt too bad, but the whole day just depends on how good/awful the customers are. My deputy manager when he first started was really condescending to me, and because I’m not professional, and reasonably articulate, I just gave it back to him in an equal dose. Like not rude, but made it very apparent that I wasn’t going to be spoken too like that. He didn’t do it again.
So that begs the question, when are you moving on up (down) south? gonna be here in time for the next Goodwood Breakfast Club? (7th Aug)
