Uses hi range and leaves the intrusive road based traction control engaged (that’s the beep you hear, its cutting throttle and stopping the wheels from spinning), doesn’t use ATRAC, the rear locker or crawl control...makes a big show about how precarious it all is that it can’t make it...gets “rescued” by the winch on the Raptor. Man alive
I simultaneously love and hate this channel. Its the ONLY channel consistently taking new trucks and putting them to use in a way that relevant to me...but they are also consistently proving that they have no clue what they are doing.

So much funny but so little credibility for all the reasons you mentioned. “I have more experience than Brian”. I want to go there and try, in that 4Runner, and as with all video, it doesn’t make it look as hard as it really was but, geez c’mon, he talks about momentum and that’s the only thing he needed at the top and couldn’t pull it off. It is good to see that kind of use getting out there. My experience says that both should make short work of a trail like that.
His best call of the day was to bail when lightning was coming.

They’ve responded saying that they were indeed in low range...though I still have my doubts based on the fact that the VCS was still very much in control and by the engine note.

“Experts”
I’m surprised Lo doesn’t automatically kill the nannies.

that’s the thing...I think it does, which lends credence to the fact that I don’t think they were in 4lo until they descended.

My bad. I just re-read your post and saw 4 hi.
They should have gone Lo or shut the TC off.

I would watch the crap out of a show where they take stock trucks and do things that make them do things better and then show how its better and what is a waste. I am so sick of bro trucks I want to get something simple and small and make it do wonderful things without truck nuts and way too much lift and tire.

From reading some other “allegedly” “educated” comments on the video, it seems that the beeping was a warning that the transfer case didn’t make it into low range.
So, the switch was probably set correctly, but they didn’t follow the proper procedure (put transmission in neutral, stopped or moving very slowly). So, it shifted into 4-high because it can do that at speed, but didn’t make it to 4-low. I’m hesitant to believe that a warning didn’t show up on the dash, but I’m not sure if this model does that, or the light on the shift dial (?) just blinks instead of being solid.
Also, if this model had a locking rear, it wasn’t locked. You can clearly see 1 rear wheel spinning and the other not in the video.

That makes a lot of sense, since is clear that the locker is out, and vcs is obviously on and atrac is off. That and the fact that it looks and sounds like high range would all line up.

That makes more sense now. Couldn't understand why the 4Runner was having so much trouble.

I feel the same way about TFL Trucks (and Cars for that matter). They do a lot of great comparisons but I frequently feel disappointed after watching their videos. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them read car specs straight off a piece of paper and get them wrong.
Sometimes it’s decent background noise when I want to consume a list of TRDPro/OffRoad/Raptor videos on YouTube while not paying close attention.
