I’ve applied to a few jobs in the Toronto area recently. Anything I should know beforehand and any places to look? I’ve been looking through Canadian indeed, LinkedIn, Workopolis, and found a few big companies that have offices there (Ubisoft, AOL, etc.)
Mostly been for junior designer or video editing stuff.. also applied to a couple of jobs at PostMedia and Bell.
The reason is my current job pays poop and work has slowed down considerably since it is live sports video editing. I’ve lived in NYC and Lawn Guyland pretty much all my life and I don’t want to be around here all the time anymore. Toronto is still close enough where I could come visit home for a weekend once in a while.
Any suggestions and advice would be great. Thanks!

Life advice: if you’re going to try to find a place to live, try to find one along one of the subway lines, because driving downtown blows. Not as bad as New York, but it still sucks.
Housing will be pricey, just be ready to live with that.
Chorus is also an employer in the city if you wanted to check that out.
I lived in Toronto growing up, so if you have any specific questions about the city, I might be able to help.

Thanks for the words. First thing is first, though, I would strongly prefer to get a job and then move. If that happens I’ll reach out to you for more details :)

Check Monster.ca as well for listings, and worse comes to worse, see if anyone you work with has connections with a company in Toronto?

Beside Toronto and the surrounding burbs the Kitchener/Waterloo area is a bit of a tech hub where you might want to look. Waterloo specifically has drawn many tech firms (including Google) since/because of RIM/Blackberry’s downfall and U-Waterloo’s excellent co-op program. Let me know if you end up in that area, I went to school there.

Ooh, good idea. Thanks!
Dev wise I am not a programmer but I can make basic video games in Unity 3D + VR content... and I can do graphic design and video editing as well.

Hey Nibby, I’ve lived in Toronto since 2003 when I started school and 2 of my best friends are in sports broadcasting (I’m not though. I’m in Auto). One is an on-air guy for Rogers Sportsnet ( @jesse_fuchs ) and the other is behind-the-scenes at TSN. I’m pretty sure TSN is owned by Bell so you may have covered that but definitely apply to Rogers Communications. They are MASSIVE here and I’m sure always have openings in various video departments.
Now, you didn’t actually say what you are trained in which may help any guidance we can give so let’s start there and the Toronto hive mind can get started connecting you. There are actually a lot of Toronto Oppos around from time to time so hopefully a few more can chyme in.

Hi Shmevans, thanks for your reply. I went to undergrad for studio art and a Masters in digital media. That basically covers video editing, graphic design, and some game design as well.
Been at my job for 9+ months now and have internships and such on my resume. I was under the assumption TSN was owned by ESPN since there are lots of similarities but apparently it is 80% Bell 20% ESPN.

You mentioned it but I want to +1 the use of LinkedIn for jobs. That’s how I found my current one. You might want to consider going with a recruitment agency i.e. a headhunter. There’s a number that do tech jobs in the Toronto area.

If you’re comfortable paying for a toll highway to commute into work, the east end of the GTA, the Durham Region, is really expanding right now with the 407 Highway being extended across. It’s a bit lower cost of living.

Never been, but people I’ve known that went to University there seem to have liked it.
