Maybe one of you wise Opponauts can tell me why someone would buy a car such as this and put hardly any miles on it. I think this is a complete crackpipe but correct me if I am wrong. In my opinion this isn’t really a collectable and yeah, it does have a good following but really 20K? Reminds me of one of my co-workers who has a 2007 Ford Mustang GT500 with under 600 miles on it, he wants to sell it later for more money but will something like that actually ever go up in value?

Multiple vehicles, I do about 10K per year but that gets split between two cars and three bikes.

But yeah, this price? dude is about $5K high.

I’d be afraid of that car. 525 miles a year = a lot of dried out shit that shouldn’t be dried out yet. Those GTOs are relatively common, too. Not at all a $20k car.

This is far to plebeian for someone such as himself to even consider driving. I mean its a Pontiac, and was what, $30k brand new. Thats like at a bare minimum $100,000 to cheap for him.

Exactly, I believe this has been on craigslist for like 2 or 3 years now and the price has only ever dropped by $1,000.

I hate this kind of thing. These are simply too few miles to keep everything running properly, to work out any latent issues the car might have, plus it reeks of “overly hopeful opportunistic jerk” in too many cases. As a quick comparison, my dad DD’s a 2004 VW R32 (he looked at the GTO, too) that he has owned since new. It just got its second set of tires...ever. It has 43k miles on it. He drives it a few times a week, rain, snow, short roadtrips. He can still get about 75% of its original sticker price, but that wasn’t his goal — and he surely wasn’t going to fail to enjoy it along the way. These kinds of cars typically drop in value for 20-30 years, then might spike back up, but that’s rare (Supra; plus the usual "true classics" and muscle cars). Half of those cases, it's a short-term bubble.

Too cheap for him to consider buying . His car collection is generally rotting because most have never been driven.

Why would you want to drive this it’s the new GTO this thing was going to revive the Pontiac brand and finally give those Corvette and Mustang owners something to really think about! I bet these will be worth a lot of money in the future heck I’d get one now if I was you since they’ll be worth so much FUTURE CLASSIC RIGHT HERE IMMA BUY ME ONE AND HOLD IT AND LOVE IT AND PET IT AND WASH IT EVERY DAY UNTIL IT GETS ME A $50,000 PAYDAY IN 2030!

But when you found out it was a flop and was cancelled after three years you think you would reconsider your 500 mile per year limit or whatever this guy had in his head.

I looked on my local CL to get an idea of the market. There are several with well less than 100,000 miles (which is about where I’d also start getting worried) for ~$10,000.

When you dig yourself too deep, you think your only option is to go further in hopes of breaking through the other side.

A regular mustang, no, a GT500, absolutely. It may take 40 years though.

But its not the first year of the new GT500, its not special in any way beside the stereotypical white with blue stripes and the correct 6 speed. He may have a chance to break even over a long period of time, but he isn’t that young either.

I can imagine why someone would not drive that car in January (minne-snow-da) of most years but you’re right, unless you’ve got something special, drive it. A GTO is a good car, but it’s not going to be special for a long ass time.

And let me be clear, if you've got something special you should still drive it but I'll be more understanding if you don't.

You go to a place and get really bad service. You go to what you think is their competitor hoping to show the first place up. Only you later find out both places are owned by the same person....

give those corvettes something to think about

Weirdos who buy production cars as investments do this. Even if they do appreciate they rarely beat what an index fund would return in the same time frame. See all the guys who bought and ‘76 Eldoradosand stored them away because they were sure that the “last American convertible” would be extremely valuable some day. Yeah, no.

The only new GTO that may be worth something is this one:

Kinja'd!!!

2004 Barbados Blue with a six-speed manual. One year color, very rare with the proper transmission. The W40 cars too, mayyyybe, but only 271 manual cars were made in this color. W40 (Pulse Red) automatics are next at 282.

People have odd attachments. My grandfather paid to have an old Ford tractor professionally restored and then kept it in his garage, on a carpeted pad, under tarps. He would drive it up and down the driveway once or twice a year. And before you ask, no, this wasn’t a collectible tractor. It was a ‘53 model and was appraised to be worth around 2,500 bucks when my grandfather died in 2013. My uncle bought it and proceeded to, you know, use it as a tractor, and my late grandfather’s wife acted like that was just a travesty.

During one of my regular dealership drive thru’s one of my local dealers last summer had a ‘10 Camaro 2SS(fully loaded, yellow with the black stripes) that some older gentlemen had traded in on a new z06. ODO read 252 miles, they were asking over $30K for it. I actually broke my rule and stopped and asked about it and they told me that the guy buys cars like that and puts them on racks in his garage and never drives them. Apparently he has a GT and a G8 GXP as well.

I don’t fully understand it.

It is well known for GTO owners. They sold every GTO brought into the country. The Monaro production began in late 1999/early 2000, and was mid way through production when the US got the GTOs. Bob Lutz new this, and had an agreement with Holden of Australia. The G8s came out next. We were slated to get the Ute over here as the G8 ST, but the market crashed and GM bankruptcy....

We were going to get another Monaro based GTO called the Coupe 60, but GM decided to revive the redneck trailer park special camaro...

While it’s the “stereotypical” setup, it also means it’s one of the most popular set ups and it being original helps in value. As opposed to an ugly color scheme getting re-sprayed to match the one your buddy has tucked away.

GT500 I get, GTO is a stretch.

How does the old adage go?

Owning a car and not driving it is like having an attractive significant other and doing nothing with them because you're saving them for the next person.
