Because of price gouging dealers. I love the RS but there’s no way I’m dropping 50 grand on one. The cheapest I seen one was for 39. That’s more reasonable. At 39 it’s like “ok I see the performance here”. At 50 it’s “I just see a Focus before anything else.

That’s crazy. I remember back when I was selling at a Chevy store and the Buick store next door back in 09. The then new Camaro had market adjustments adding 15-20k on them, ZR1's had 30 and even Lacrosse had 10. It was sickening.

Yea dealers think that because they might be sold out ( and take that with a grain of salt) that means they can charge 20-30 grand over MSRP and it doesn't. On top of that they might be sold out but there's other dealers that aren't.

Ha yea. I’m saying that from what I’ve seen with the prices on these things most are in the high 40's low 50s and even 60's. Their regular MSRP of about 35-39 makes way more sense even though it’s a huge jump over what the ST is.

There is an oppo who’s got one on order for sticker. Said that he had to try a few dealers before one would put in an order for sticker. I found a dealer to work with me on a Golf R but it was going to take 4 months to order so I passed.

I would love to know what car started this trend. The R8 maybe? Everyone does it now. I put $500 down on an M2 almost a year before release and the dealer called me a few weeks prior to their first delivery saying that they would refund my money or that I could put another $1k on top and expect to pay well over sticker when it arrives. I was really only in it for the test drive, so I passed.

You have a link to that article? I bet it's a good read. But I've always wondered that as well. When I was in the car business I saw it all the time and it really is a disservice to the customer. Especially when they try to pass it off as some kind of package or trim. I know they are in the business to make money why should someone have to go to 4 or 5t different dealers to get the right price? It's greed and it's sad.

I have a mental theory that no car variant can exceed 2x the price of the base version, or people tend to start walking away. That's the point where you stop and say "Yeah...but it's still a Focus!" (or Golf, Lancer, Impreza, etc) I can see high $30s on this, but even that's pushing it a little.

In a world that made sense regarding selling cars that would be a genius move. I totally agree with you too. I'm a huge fan of those cars. But at the end of the day, while you appreciate the performance and engineering that went into them you still sit back and say that's still a basic ass, rental grade whatever and no amount of Brembo brakes, turbos or drift modes can change that when they start to command serious money.

And I don’t mean just superficially...to me, it's also the business side. Part of me thinks “Wait a minute, this car was mostly designed, built, certified, and tested based on the work of a general mass market car. It's not some bestpoke performance car, but it's almost priced like it is (eg Lotus Elise)." For some reason, that irks me the most.

06/28/2016 at 11:49

I never thought about it like that. It’s crazy and true. All they did was add on( in some cases) a few engine mods to the same engine, suspension, special brakes and wheels, areo, special seats and maybe a different trans. I look at it like if I were to do that myself with one of those cars, would it push up the price to what they charge? Probably not.

He also doesn’t have the costs of shutting down a Focus assembly line and setting it up for a run of RS’s and then setting it back up for the normal cars - or of devoting an entire line to the RS’s.

The parts savings itself is probably a wash after considering all the people in the purchasing department and warehouse that have their hands in the process at Ford.

Large corporations are not very efficient.

Kinja'd!!! Ash78, voting early and often > Anoos
07/07/2016 at 12:10

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh, I agree completely. At some level of sheer headcount, the “impression” of efficiency starts to take over, but it’s not really there. I’ve always worked at companies with 50-1,000 employees and we had to be efficient or pay the price. Now I work with 300,000 people and the individual levels of redundancy is insane, but in part is a requirement for being so large (especially in a heavily regulated industry, which I'm in...not auto, though).

Kinja'd!!! abaiz.2009 > LJ909
07/07/2016 at 13:13

It is crap that they are listing that as MSRP, but mark-ups like that on new and “anticipated” cars is nothing new. I was just looking at a BMW M2 here in California, the window sticker said $58,660, but they advertised the price as $88,660.

If you pick one of the newest and hottest cars off the showroom floor you will pay a premium for it. Its the cost of instant gratification. If you order yours and wait for it to arrive, you will pay MSRP.

“Its not about asking prices its about what someone will pay”

Because its one thing to try and make money off of someone so you won’t come out at a loss. It’s another to take advantage of someone. $2-$3 grand? Ok. $10 & $15 grand above sticker for no other reason than the dealer making the car more special than it really is and adding on bogus extras? That’s what’s wrong.

Kinja'd!!! Chris@Carlypso > LJ909
01/23/2017 at 01:26

Kinja'd!!!0

I don’t know if they’re “making it more special” or just people really want them. They’re a business selling commodities, some go lower than expected, some higher. The “MSRP” has long been considered irrelevant, why get mad when its wrong in the other direction, its just a functioning marketplace. If no one will pay it, I’m sure the dealer will lower his price.

Kinja'd!!! LJ909 > Chris@Carlypso
01/23/2017 at 02:05

Kinja'd!!!0

They’re making it more special. I used to sell cars. I know first hand. And they won’t budge if they think they see demand there. Sad thing is people buy into it. It’s more than just a business selling commodities so they can turn a profit. Car sales is a psychological game with people. That’s why I see charging over MSRP is wrong. Especially when it’s outrageously over and well over reason. Talking a customer up on an RS over an ST that’s already 20k over sticker and justify it with bull like an “optional” anti theft system that really isn’t optional, nitrous filled tires etc isn’t a good way to do business.
