Would it be a bad idea do daily a 3000GT?

I wouldn’t think so - it’s just a FWD V6 - not really a lot of reliability issues with that kind of set up is there?

Is it the AWD model? And I recall at the time the automotive press criticizing it for being too complicated, too heavy, and too thirsty.

Yes. Yes it would. There’s a reason they never jumped in price like the Zs and Supras of the 90s did. It’s also stupid heavy.

The FWD

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: This is the worst idea ever, at least if it’s a VR-4.
I will say, the base V6 is really hard to kill, but they are a total bastard to work on in any form, and I hate them for this reason.

I wouldn’t daily a VR-4

Because I’m unsure if you’re hinting at the most complex and most electronics crazy ones, which *do* break, I don’t know if you’re trolling here or not.

Legitimately not trolling - I was under the impression that Mitsubishi made relatively reliable V6 engine combos. Our Diamante soldiered on for almost a decade before we handed down to my sister, who drove it into the ground almost 150,000 miles later.

This is true. I hate most Mitsubishis for being hard to work on, but the base V6 is actually a very tough engine that can do big mileage.

A base 3000GT can be quite okay, though there are schizy ones out there. The top of the line VR4s with massive amounts of electronics, all wheel steering, twin turbos, all wheel drive, etc. can be a roaring circus of repair and maintenance, or that’s the impression I’ve gotten. Parts are spendy regardless. As to the Mit V6s (mind you, not necessarily the 4s) being reliable, that’s as may be, but then you get wacky stuff like the Montero that came through my dad’s shop with a slowly dying computer...

Well, that’s less complication - probably thirstier than say, an Eclipse. But comfortable - sat in one ever so long ago. A decent, untouched Supra would cost way more. 300ZX of the period was a pig ... huh. Parts availability? On the other hand ...

Look at the list of

cars that engine was in. It was
the
mediocre Chrysler V6.

The VR-4 is a great performer, but so much stuff is ghettorigged from the factory and they’re a BITCH to work on that you have to have a backup car.
The non VR-4... ugh. Slow as fuck. As in, my Riviera has outrun them on multiple occasions. FWD slow-ass 8sec-to-60 rubbish that weighs a million pounds and is STILL a pain in the ass to work on.

The supercharged one is faster than a VR-4, doesn’t handle near as well, though, nor does it have quite as many “toys” (motorized seat bolsters in the 3000GT midrange models are cool as hell), but it’s comfy, good fuel economy, reliable, and easy to work on with cheap domestic parts.
