My grandmother passed away monday night of Alzheimer’s. She was 79. I loved her, she was the best grandma ever, called her Babateenie (a mashup of Russian “baba” and Teenie, her childhood nickname, short for Christine) used to get on the floor and play hotwheels with me when I was a kid, she was my buddy. We were closer than close. It’s been rough, but tonight was nice, my dad, aunt, uncle, grandpa, and I sat around looking at old photos, and of course I snagged all the car ones for you fine folk.
My grandmother, great grandfather, and his beloved Studebaker.
Another of the Stude, she used to tell me all about it when I was a kid, about picking it up from the dealership and how it was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen. He had to sell it when the war started. Replaced it with a ‘36 ford he hand painted wig a brush and named Agnes. My grandmother HATED Agnes.
My grandfather was a hillclimb racer in his younger years. This was his ‘59 Triumph TR3. His DD for over 10 years and 4 kids. He Jerry rigged a back seat to seat all four plus hunting dogs. My grandmother always had station wagons up until the ‘80s, when she started buying small hatchbacks.
My grandpa handed me this and said “I don’t know who this is, but here’s a pic for ya.”
My great great grandfather and his REO. My grandmother spoke fondly of this too, she’s the one who first told me REO stood for Ransom Eli Olds.
My dad and grandma, her old Country Squire. Had a red interior, she complained to me about how when my dad was a baby, he took the lid off his bottle of milk and threw it from the front row all the way back, staining the red seats. It rusted to shit in 5 years and she replaced it with a ‘72 Custom Cruiser with every option ticked. Her favorite station wagon she ever owned.
My grandpa and grandma in front of their first house, circa 1959. The Olds my great grandfather handed down to my grandmother in the driveway, and the TR3 in the garage.
My grandma in her college years, circa 1956ish.
Rest in peace, Babateenie, I love you <3

My grandp claims to have a pic of the Triumph all winterized (roof, window flaps, tire chains) and in the snow, but so far has failed to deliver.

Now this is a bad ass car! Your great grandad looks pretty slick in this too. All that is missing is a huge cigar and a tommy gun.
