Came into work today and read this update, and got this in my FCA e-mail:
Safety Recall S27 / NHTSA 16V-240
Transmission Electronic Shift Lever
2014 - 2015 (WK) Jeep Grand Cherokee
NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a 3.6L or a 5.7L gas engine. This recall will does not include 3.0L diesel and all SRT models at this time. These models willl added to this recall in July /August of 2016.
NOTE: This recall will does not include LD and LX models at this time. These models willl added to this recall in July /August of 2016.
The electronic shift lever on about 536,000 of the above vehicles may allow a roll away condition if the vehicle’s engine is left running, the parking brake is not engaged, and the transmission is not in the “PARK” position before exiting the vehicle.
New software must be installed which includes an “Auto Park” feature which eliminates the possibility of the driver inadvertently failing to place the transmission into “PARK” prior to exiting the vehicle. An addendum card for the owner’s manual must be placed in each vehicle.

Wow people are morons. I don’t want to protect people that can’t remember to slide the funny gear mover lever from d to p.

That’s the problem, you’re not moving a lever. You’re pushing on a button.

So were blaming cars for human negligence now.

Yes, have been for a few years now.

The shifter is more like a joystick that always returns to center. You move the shifter a certain number of clicks to select whichever PRND, and then it returns to center.
If for some reason a person doesn’t quite push the shifter far enough, it could end up in R or N, and the shifter would still be in its normal centered position, with no real good indication to the driver that “HEY THIS ISN’T IN P.”
With BMW’s stupid shifter that’s also over complicated like this, it has a separate button to put it in P, and an automatic put-it-in-park function if you open the door and the car is not yet in P.
That auto-P function is what FCA is adding with this software update.

There’s nothing quite like killing celebrities to move the gears of bureaucracy.

Sad truth. Hundreds of people can die off something but if someone with money or relatively famous dies and people start moving heaven and earth.

The simple fact that every other manufacturer aside from FCA that uses electronic gear levers already does this and not them is incredibly dumbfounding...

Did anybody other than Mr. Yelchin die as a result of this? As far as I was informed it all came down to simple crashes that could have (maybe) injured someone, but I was under the impression that he was the first death...
