My dad is looking to get a new car within the next year or two and I’ve been suggesting an all !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! or at least a hybrid. This past few days he finally took my suggestions seriously....and said he want’s a Prius. He was so high on the idea that he has already started shopping them.

Just show him better electrics and hybrids. The Prius is actually a bad hybrid. There are much better systems.

I mean, what’s he using it for?
Does he care about handling/speed?
As much as we all dislike them they’re perfectly fine cars for people buy cars as appliances. I’d prefer he was in something else but hey, if he likes to drive a dishwasher, it’s a great dishwasher.

As long as he’s skipping the first two gens, aka the “Echo with hybrid system” and the “actually made from a soup can”. I mean, it’s not *good* past that, but it’s only mostly awful.

Nothing wrong with the Prius. It’s not a fun car to drive, but it is reliable, safe, and efficient. If that meets his needs, then don’t worry about it.

Driving to and from: the train station, gym, errands, etc.
He does but doesn’t. If i gave him my car for a week it’d be the harshest week my car will ever see. Having a car that can lap an autocross course quickly is not required though.

The Prius is no fun to drive, but between the costs of ownership and packaging efficiency it’s pretty good at being a car.

Is there any reason why a Prius wouldn’t be a good car for him? I personally think the second-gen Volt is a better EV/EREV, but neither one is a bad choice if you’re looking for electric/hybrid compacts.

If anyone has failed at this, it’s me. My dad went to CarMax and came back with a manual Acura ILX (fantastic little car). After a few back surgeries, he didn’t like the seats. So he returned the ILX with the CarMax week long thing and got a white, 4cyl, Camry.

Been trying to do so, but he’s as stubborn as a mule when it comes to car purchases. I’ve recommended everything under the sun of entry level luxury and there’s always some ‘reason’ as to why he’d never buy it

Just tell him to wait a little bit and get an Ioniq.
I don’t mind the new Prius one bit, but I’d take an Ioniq over one any day of the week. And, if he wants an all-out EV, a full BEV Ioniq is coming too, and a plug in hybrid.

Who really cares? I mean, unless he is planning on carving the canyons, going to track days, or running autocross, a Prius is fine for pretty much anything else. And it gets 50-60 mpg, so it's super cheap to run. We have one, and it hasn't made any of us any less of an enthusiast.

My dad was kinda like that, before that he had an 02 Buick Regal and when the transmission was dying in that he kinda just impulse bought a Hyundai Sonata. I think he didn’t enjoy driving it and that was what made him want something nicer. With my unhealthy BMW obsession he started looking at 3 series coupes, and I suggested if you’re gonna go the coupe route you might want to look at the 1 series cause you don’t need the back seat. So I guess he was looking at them and then a 135is came on the market and I guess it fit all the specs, apart from the original budget but I guess he had a 128i for a day to test drive and brought it home and it was pretty spartan and my mom was like if you’re gonna get something nice for yourself you should get all the options, so the budget was augmented. I was pretty shocked when I was sitting in the data van at work and he texted me a picture of it. He made the comment to me that if he knew how well these things drove he’d had one a long time ago.

I am talking purely on the technical side but the Volt actually has a really good hybrid system. Honda’s system is also pretty good. On the electric side Tesla is king but they are really expensive. The Leaf and i3 are good if you can live with the small size and lower range. I only really have something against Toyota’s implementation which hasn’t changed (other than battery type) since the 90s. The best hybrids use the electric in combination with the gas engine unlike Toyota’s which uses all the electric energy and then switches to gas.

Out of curiosity, why? Because of what the CR-Z should have been? Or do they just function poorly as the vehicle they are trying to be?

While the Prius might not be engaging to drive, it’s a damn good vehicle for what you said his purposes are. I might try to sway him in to something with an ICE though, like a Corolla or Civic. He could probably get a leftover Civic pretty cheap. I'm sure there's still some 9th gens out there.

FWIW, I have a herniated disc in my back, and it was absolute murder on it. It didn’t hurt most of the time driving it, but whenever starting from a stop (when you needed to fully hold in the clutch) it would send a shot of pain right up my spine. It sucks, but I can totally see why he went the easier/less painful route.

I test drove one before I bought my Si so I ending up doing a back to back comparison.
I didn’t like the way it handled, rear visibility sucked, I didn’t enjoy the short highway drive i had with it either. I wasn’t planning to pay more (the CRZ i looked at was 11k, my Si was 10) for a car that wouldn’t give me any added benefits

Fair enough. That's kind of a bummer. I was kind of considering one. But then again, my next Honda will probably be a Fit, when Honda finally realizes that they need to make a true sporty Fit model (so, you know, maybe never).

B-class electric is a good option too, especially if Tesla stuff is appealing, since the B uses all Tesla HV components. Not the best looking car, but is better than a prius in every way aside from range. Much like an i3, but with more traditional styling and materials and 4 doors.
