The brakes on the S2000 have been feeling a bit vague and squishy lately, and I have no idea of the history of the fluid, so I took advantage of the cool, dry weather to do my first ever brake bleed.
Billman is perhaps the East Coast’s most celebrated S2000 mechanic, and he has a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! he uses and recommends, so that’s what I did. I used ATE amber DOT4 fluid.
Usually, when I do something mechanical for the first time, I encounter something unexpected and it freaks me out. This time was no exception: I started the bleed, and it looked like nothing was happening, and at times the fluid was even backing up into the system. I started to panic, but then chilled out and continued on with the procedure. After doing other wheels I figured out that it only looked like it was backing up when I moved the bottle around; the fluid was actually flowing in a trickle down into the bottle.
Took her out for a spin, and success! the pedal was noticeably tighter under hard braking.
I also did an oil change for good measure, and replaced the no-name air cleaner element with OEM goodness.

Stock AP1 Suzuka Blue, I bought it in November from a VW dealer in South Carolina. Carfax showed promising maintenance history, and Billman said it looked to be in excellent condition. My intention is to keep it generally stock, although I wouldn’t mind some sportier seats and perhaps CR aero, but that’s really a pipe dream.

Good sign that the brake fluid was still clear. Doesn’t sound like PO drove it too hard.

Speaking of S2000s, I alluded in a post yesterday to my coworker getting his back on the road the other day. Well, he came to work today and announced “car’s broke!” Something in the bottom end. I feel so bad for him because he worked really hard getting it going again only to have it break again after 2 days.

Fluid changes sure are satisfying. The pedal feel is the best part!
Is that the old fluid I see in your pic? I’ve seen worse, much worse...

Yeah it is, I had no idea what I would find. They probably bled it at the place I bought it from.

Yeah. He said he isn’t sure what to do yet. He might get another engine, or possibly sell it and get an R32 GT-R that a friend of his is selling. If he unloads it I might consider picking it up, depending on the price. Aside from the dead engine it’s in great condition.
