You know the stereotype about BMW drivers: they’re assholes. The whole time I had my leased 135is I didn’t spend much time on BMW forums because I wasn’t modding it. But now I own my 335xi and I’m messing with it, so I’m spending more time researching on forums.

Let me tell you: nobody over there got the “don’t be a dick” memo like here. It’s like the wild wild west of trolling and arguing and insulting and it sucks.

The worst part of it is self-appointed experts who not only don’t know what they’re talking about but perpetually assume you don’t know what you’re talking about and try to correct you when there’s nothing to correct.

The second worst part of it is the “do you even track day bro” snobs who constantly look for opportunities to bash people over the head with the idea that there’s no point of any of the mods people do to their cars if it’s not in support of some specific motorsports activity.

Not that everyone here behaves perfectly 100% of the time but man, I’ve been semi-actively posting on E90Post for not even a month and it’s already driving me bonkers.

Oppo, I appreciate you.

what?

Are there any manufacturer-specific forums that aren’t total circle jerks? I used to spend significant time on a VW/Audi board. And now I occasionally lurk on a scooter forum. Equally ridiculous.

Have you found a good one to join? I’ve been an E9X for almost two years and never seriously looked into joining one, I was thinking maybe M3 post, but I’m not sure.

I can agree with this generally. There are the trolls who think yif you dont have the biggest engine in the series, your worthless. Others who buy their 200k mile E46 and think they are ballin, and know everything too.

BTW, I have an appt today to check out a 2014 328 6 speed M-Sport Sedan RWD). Hoping for a decent trade in for my 128 6 speed Msport. We’ll see.

Like 10-15 years ago I was on a couple Honda/Acura forums and there was plenty of asshattery but I found them useful.

Miata.net was pretty decent when I was on there when I got a Miata after my Integra GSR. Had that car from 2004-2008. I did a little bit but not much on a couple other Mazda forums when I had my MS6 from 2008-2013, but not enough to really get a flavor for them.

I would think the Miata guys would be a decent group. I was always impressed by their overall friendliness and maturity when I used to hang around with the autocross groups.

Ungh I hate that response. If I have to ask, I usually try to preface a question by saying, I used it and I couldn’t find it, so I apologize if I am repeating a question and if you direct me to that thread...blah blah blah blah. That usually quells the haters.

I have one forum I am on. No one seems to be a huge asshole, and people are generally informative. If a disagreement occurs people remain civil.

I’m keeping this one a secret. It’s all mine. You can’t have it.

Yeah it’s definitely frustrating. It’s not like acting as a reasonable human being and BMW enthusiasm are mutually exclusive, but they often are.

I haven’t driven that 328i but I did try out an M235i xDrive. It definitely performed well but didn’t have much in the way of feel, particularly the steering. I did really like how firm the brake pedal was which would’ve been nice for heel-toeing, if you could get it in a stick. I suppose those same brakes are on the non-xDrive M235i which is still available with a stick.

Quite frankly, this is probably one of the better (if not the best!) online auto communities out there.

Why? Because, we are not tied to any specific make or model. It seems that we appreciate everything.

Even Celicas. ;)

Not sure how the e9x section of Bimmerforums is but you could try there. The e30 section there is generally informative enough, though I haven’t spent enough time there to become either fond or jaded.

It’s funny, Miatas have a certain stigma about them, but most Miata enthusiast folks like the cars more than they worry about the stigma because they know that stigma doesn’t apply to them.

BMWs also have a certain stigma about them, but many BMW enthusiast folks very much conform to that stigma.

Me, I’m the guy who very reluctantly put 50% tint on his BMW because I wanted to clean up the overall looks but didn’t want the tint to be so dark that I’d be yet another douchebag in a BMW you can’t see into.

A strong correlation between the amount of work and money to keep them on the road v. level of douchebaggery.

The E9x section on Bimmerforums looks pretty barren. The E9x section on Bimmerfest seems to be a bit more active. N54tech seems to be a useful place but it’s very focused on engine mods and not so much the rest of the cars.

I’ve seen a couple of people join a forum who are super clueless and deserve a suitable response.

One guy, no I’ll copy the text he wrote for that full WTF moment.

“Hi, I’m new to this forum and hope you can help me. I bought a brand new Superb Combi in April this year (2014). I had it specked up to the maximum and was really looking forward to owning a brand new car. About 2 weeks ago after I had finished work on a very hot day I used the electronic key to wind down all the windows to get air into the car as I approached it. I drove off and wound up the front windows. As I got to about 50mph the car started to vibrate and a low frequency heavy rumble started. It was like a sub woofer had been turned up fully and I could feel the pulsation in my ears and throughout my body and the car vibrated. I honestly thought the car was going to fall to pieces. I tried slowing down and the low frequency rumble got better. I then speeded up again and it started again. As I was on a motorway the safety implications are obvious! I then remembered my rear windows were down so I wound them up which cured the problem.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Since then I have told the dealer who told me this is normal and they drove me in a comparable 2014 model and indeed it did the same thing. Obviously it is due to airflow and they kindly explained this to me (I’m an airline pilot so I do know about aerodynamics) and said that cars are normally driven with windows up these days and use the Air Con instead of using the windows. I suppose I should be happy with the explanation but I’m not. If I had known this was going to happen I would not have bought the car. Electronic windows are there so they can be wound down at any time by myself or the passengers in the rear seat. If it causes this problem (and it’s suggested by the dealer not to use them), then in my opinion the car is not suitable for purpose. Perhaps I should place a placard in the rear cabin for the passengers stating “Do Not Use Rear Windows”.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Has anyone else found this is a problem or indeed has anyone tried driving with only the rear windows down?”

I mean seriously. Idiot. He got butthurt when people rightly went ‘what?’.

1.... Are you actually being serious?

2.... Yes, on every 4 door car I have owned in the last four decades.... so the trick is? CLOSE THE WINDOWS!!!

You’re a qualified airline pilot??? Please tell us with which airline.

Happened with every car, with opening rear windows, that I have ever owned. What car do you intend to buy as a replacement for your “not suitable for purpose” Superb? Don’t forget to drive it with the rear windows down on the test drive.

I half think the original post is a wind-up.

The guy came back for one last reply (s/he’s not been back since).

No point using this forum then if a torrent of abuse is coming my way to a genuine concern of mine!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Thanks to those who responded with dignified and respectful replies though.

Interesting, we have most of these items in my household but 3 cats and no dogs. We also have an Impreza.

Fun fact: I went on NASIOC to ask if there’s any way to add lighted vanity mirrors to my fiancee’s fully-loaded ’16 Impreza Sport Limited that for some reason has no lights on the vanity mirrors. NASIOC makes you have a certain level of posts before you can start a thread. So I tried to chime in various places to get enough posts to start a thread, but I forgot about it.

Maybe I should go back.
