My son is the living definition of them right now. I’d heard stories, but sweet Jesus, you don’t really know until it’s your kid.

He’ll go from totally calm to Chernobyl in the blink of an eye and then right back. Oftentimes for no apparent reason.

The worst part is, I’ve had a couple people tell me in the last week that 3 was worse in their experience.

Sweet.

As the father of a 13-year-old and two 10-year-olds, I can tell you that it never gets easier or harder. It just gets different. Hang in there.

I’m already seeing evidence of that. Amazing how they change just at the moment when you finally get used to their new habits.

Most of the time now, my wife and I just look at each other and laugh.

Probably just had not enough brick and no one wants to trade for his sheep.

Ever notice how it always seems to be sheep that are plentiful? New Zealand jokes abound!

As a father of an 8, soon to be 6 and a 2.5 year-old, I can say, just wait until they are 3.

2 has nothing on 3.

My daughter turns two in early August. I'm impressed on how quick she can flip her shit for no discernible reason. The best is if shes trying to throw a tantrum, I'll walk away, and she follows me to throw the tantrum wherever I go.

Yep, my son will do that. Or if he’s on a hard surface, he’ll run on to carpet so he can throw himself down.

My daughter knows we'll pick her up if shes having a tantrum, so she'll lower herself gently to the ground on hard surfaces like in the kitchen. Carpet is full on flop

I don’t know what to tell you but it’s normal and find a tactic and stick with it. My daughter is almost 2 and I’m always surprised at how quickly a tantrum happens, how unreasonable she is, and then, how quickly they can be done. My mother in law also recently told me that she thought three was worst and I almost cried.

Mine will throw herself down on pavement. She’s an expert faller (hasn’t hurt herself). She’s 3-1/2 now, sooooo ... Yeah, as bad as 2 is, 3 is a hell of a thing. The bad news is the crazy gets crazier, but the good news is the good stuff gets better.

My six year old got mad at my 10 YO. Started calling him a, “Fucking, fucking, fucking, fucking, fucking bitch.”

That’s how we knew he was upset. I gave him hell when I came back to the area. After I laughed my ass off in the other room for a bit.

Also, <3 Settlers of Catan.

I’ve got a four year old. His three’s were worse than the two’s, but his two’s weren’t too bad. Be consistent with rules, give them the illusion of choice, make the punishment fit the crime and don’t back down when they flip their shit.

Routine can also help to avoid them flipping their shit on some things. For us bedtime is get jammies on, have a snack, brush teeth, read a book. Every night. Occasionally the Finnlet would protest, but by doing things in the same routine every night it would only be the occasional melt down and everything would be good the next night.

As for choice, the two’s and three’s are when a kid is discovering independence and free will. Instead of arguing with them about whether or not they are going to eat lunch, give them the choice of whether they will eat PBJ or ham sandwich for lunch. They still have choice and get to show their independence, but they don’t realize there is no choice about eating lunch or not. If you simply tell them they are eating the PBJ you made them for lunch whether they like it or not things won’t go well.

My wife affectionately calls our 3.5 year old son “The Dictator”.

As a dad of three, my advice is to just not let it get under your skin, as hard as that may be. When they’re acting like that, put them in a place where they can be as angry as they want to be without damaging anything (or themselves) and will disturb you as little as possible. When they’re ready to apologize and act accordingly, let them rejoin civilized society.
