Probably about two years ago the stereo in my 240D crapped out. It would work intermittently but mostly just not at all.
The internet and history led me to believe it was a bad ground. That tested okay. Then I redid and soldered all the connections in the hopes that issue was just in crappily done connections.
Didn’t think it came out too bad for my first time attempting this. I didn’t even burn myself(that much).
Tested it out..... Aaaaannnnnnnndddddd nothing.
Then I began pulling each set of speaker wires one at a time with the ignition on. When I pulled the right rear speaker the other 3 turned on. “Huh?”I removed that speaker, and using a short piece of speaker wire, hooked it to the stereo. It worked! So I ran new wire to that speaker and everything works great now. Apparently one speaker can disable an entire system.

I have never heard of a single speaker grounding out the whole system. Must be that Arthur dent fellow causing gremlins.

I had a speaker lead come loose inside the door, and when it made contact with the sheet metal my receiver would reset itself. Don’t know if it was the short itself, or a protection mechanism.

I’ve had a loose speaker lead reset my receiver every time it made contact with metal. Makes more sense for a short than a loose ground, but it’s possible the stereo is detecting the lifted ground and cutting power.

In the 300D sometimes the windshield wipers won’t work. But if you turn the wipers on before you start the car they are fine after that. Voodoo

Makes sense why sometimes it would read “amp error” then.

sounds like the starter on your wipers is shot. Try replacing it. While you have the gas tank out, replace the headlight fluids
