So I spent this past long weekend in Iceland ($500 Round Trip from Denver). If you haven’t looked into exploring this amazing country, I suggest you do. It’s becoming a major tourism destination and I’m glad I visited prior to it being overrun.
Anyway, I was curious about the cars in the region, and here are a few pictures and thoughts:
There were a lot more I took, but here were my thoughts:
- A lot more of an American influence than most of the EU I’ve been to (tons of Explorers, Sierra Denali’s, Silverado’s, Escape’s, F250's, etc)
- Way more automatics than I expected
- Lots of US imports (still had dealer info on backs on them, S60R above still have PA Registration stickers)
- They lift trucks a lot classier than we do, with wider fenders, etc
- They seemingly lift anything they can
- Defenders everywhere (even to rent!)
- Super low speed limits
- Roundabouts everywhere
- Gas is outrageously expensive
- People here are slow, but good drivers (attentive, use headlights, turnsignals, etc)
I drove this creampuff for 600+ miles...expect a review to follow:
Enjoy a few waterfalls in the meantime...

Tell me more about this $500 round trip ticket please. Which airline, how many stops, how far in advance did you purchase, where did you purchase etc?

Nice :) we went there a month or so ago. I’ve still got a couple of pics to post up about it actually.
Where abouts did you stay and what did you get up to?

Iceland’s car market is what I’d imagine Canada’s car market would be like if we actually had more small cars and were less dependent on the US’ market.

Very very few in Iceland...a fair amount of new XC90's and old 850's.

I used WOW Airlines there (a shitty budget Polish Airline), and IcelandAir on the way back...I booked 6 months in advance off Travelocity.

We spent 2 days in a fancy AirBNB in Reykjavik then sketchy hotels along the coast of the south. I cannot remember or even pronounce the names of the places I was (I was the driver and my passenger was the navigator).

Cool :) we spent our time there in an AirBNB in Reykjavik, but managed to luck into one that was cheaper than the hotels!
We spent most of our time on excursions, but did hire a little lifted Suzuki (I wanted a Niva and was bitterly disappointed when they didn't have one) and do the Golden Circle tour in reverse to avoid the crowds.

Iceland isn’t in the EU and probably allows vehicles that don’t comply with EU regs. I was there a couple of years ago and was surprised, given the fuel prices, by the number of huge pickups and 4wds.
I did a clockwise lap of the country in a Hyundai i10 which cost me €500 for a week. Nothing cheaper available anywhere, but that was July and high season.

That’s what I was thinking...I’m not sure how people there can afford to fill up their big rigs on there.
I got the Hyundai for $240 USD for 5 days...not too shabby. I was hopping to get some brand not available in the US, however, like a Citroen C1 or something...
