You find yourself in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with $2,000 and a need to find the best barbecue outside of Texas. Why exclude Texas? Well maybe it’s due to the outstanding warrants one accrues when setting naked hula hoop records on the Capitol steps or just that with a hypothetical budget of $2,000 this trip will be taxing enough on your poor jalopy.
Route: up the coast to eastern NC, across the state and through the smoky mountains. continue on through Tennessee, across the ol Mississippi and to the ozarks. There you’ll take a turn north and go to your final destination, Kansas City.
Car restrictions-(you didn’t think it’d be that easy did you? It’s like you haven’t even seen this entirely fictional show before)
Must be a convertible. No targas, no t tops.
For sale in the coastal South Carolina region.
NO MIATAS.
Your air conditioning will be disconnected. You will be driving in the summer and you will suffer. Your suffering will bring great ratings to this fictional show and the producer(me) will profit immensely. Also being in a climate controlled cocoon defeats the purpose of forcing you into these beaten husks of American Freedom(tm).
Choices will be graded. Below budget is good, brave choices are better.
NO MIATAS.
Because the back up car is a Miata. A stanced rusty Miata with a broken exhaust.
Pick well!

I’d watch this challenge. Give me Top Gear spinoff plz.

Stopped at “best barbecue outside of Texas.”
There’s literally no such thing.
Does not compute.

I’ll just stop off in Alabama, thanks. Also, coastal SC is referred to as the Low Country. http://charleston.craigslist.org/cto/5598012355…

My hometown, that I still live in, calls itself the “Barbecue Capital of the World.” We have a Barbecue Festival each year and such. Old Hickory Bar-B-Q is amazing and my family frequents it a lot. I guess I’d start in South Carolina and drive home. :)
This “Solaro” should get me back to Kentucky.

Eh close enough, and I’ll film a whacky scene with me cutting the roof off with an angle grinder.

Hey. Alabama is still a state and we have some damn good barbeque. And if you don’t believe it, come on down.

Just being pedantic, that’s not the Low Country(Columbia), that’s the Midlands(I live here). But, there are so many of those little Crapris around here. That makes at least 5 that I know of now.

I went to the Myrtle Beach Craigslist so everything is automatically fair game in my opinion

Fair enough. There was a turbo one on the Columbia CL a few months ago, for $500. I kind of wanted it.

I saw a red one for $500. However it said it may need a transmission. So I DQ’ed it.

This one was..... well it was a bunch of colors, but the seller was honest about it looking like crap, but said it ran and drove well.

Yeah, Big Bob Gibson’s, Dreamland, Archibald’s, Red Brick(?), etc, are all pretty well regarded in the BBQ world. In fact, there are better places than that, just not commercialized. When it comes to pork, I’ve yet to find a better state for it. I’ll give Texas beef, though.

Starting in SC is the first problem. Driving across SC is boring as shit. ESPECIALLY FROM THE LOW COUNTRY. Source: do it all the time for work.

I read “best barbecue outside of Texas” as “the second best barbecue in the country because we all know Texas has a lock on #1.” Surely you can get down with that

I’m taking the cheap way out and going with this. The extra money can be used to fix up/jerry-rig stuff together so that I can complete the journey.

I would get this lovely 72 Fiat 850 Spyder . They are asking $1500. I am sure $1000 would take it. If I am going to break down on the side of the road, I want to do it in style.
I used the Near by CL algorithm to find this bad boy

I like the idea but Bristol/Johnson City/Kingston isn’t even close to the coast.
However I would allow someone on the production crew to purchase the vehicle and resell it in South Carolina to keep up appearances. Mostly because this is possibly the most masochistic choice imaginable.
Also I assume it's a scam. Because damn that's cheap.

Yeah, I’d be wary of it too, but I am glad we can get it to work on technicalities. I am bit into making things hard on myself.

I’ll just take that 1500$ and use it for more NB2 Miata upgrades, hello JDM intake and MegaSquirt~!
Picture related: my Miata autocrossing at Myrtle Beach’s now-abandoned Freestyle Music Park about two months ago.
Seriously, I’d stay the HELL away from MB cars, all that NACL-exposure from the breeze hasn’t done wonders...
...Fuck it, let’s go down in a blaze of Lee Iacocca K-Car glory for 1250$.
Backup plan: ‘73 Mercedes-Benz 450SL in unknown “needs lots of work” condition for 800$ . Spend that remaining few hundred on welding a bunch of scrap steel to brace the rusty chassis and pray the engine doesn’t grenade itself..

Shitboxes in general it seems. The mid-80's Chevy Nova is popular in the poorer areas of the Low Country. There are also a few old Japanese parts yard hidden around the place.
