Assuming mileage and cost are the same, what would you pick, a facelift W204 Mercedes C350, or a MkVI Golf R? The Merc is sporting RWD, 302hp and 273lb-ft, and should hit 60mph in around 5.5 seconds. The Golf R was advertised with 256hp and 243lb-ft with AWD should hit 60mph in 5.8 seconds.

Dunno how it is for you at work, but if I even showed up with a nicely kept e46, I would be bombarded with "must be nice." I might go for the VW in this instance, unless I had reached peak IDGAF, then I'd treat myself to the Benz.

I wish my E46 was nicely kept, but it’s old and I’m a terrible person. I only get shit because it’s a coupe and most everyone else in construction has a truck of some sort.

C 350, I was looking at these or the new GTI. The old Golf R wasn’t on my list because the new GTI is nearly as fast but has a warranty and better on gas.

I’m a fan of that Merc V6 and I’m proud they’ve kept putting sixers in their cars. But all in, I’d probably go Golf R, but that’s 80% because I could have a piñata at my son’s birthday party and he’d be more likely to hit a C class than the actual donkey. Too common, but YMMV. Get someone to test drive a Mercedes the same time you test drive a Golf R, arrange a central meeting place, then hook them up to rear tow points. See which one pulls the other. That can make your decision, then find a car similar the one that won, you wouldn’t want either of those cars.

Then when you buy one you can tell people that’s how you decided.

IOne of my really good friends has a C250 4-matic of that gen, and I’ve driven it. while it is a very nice place to spend time, the car’s handling just didn’t feel as crisp as that of a GTI/GLI/MK7 R (I haven’t driven an mk6 R, but I’ve driven everything around it) With that being said, as a daily commuter vehicle (if weather was not a factor) I would pick the benz as I found it to be the more comfortable vehicle to drive on a commute.

If you’re looking for a fun car though, I cannot sing enough praises about the VW MK6 platform. keep in mind that with a tune the R is a 320hp car, and will take to modifications well, as well as return very good MPG. also the R has some different engine stuff from a GTI/GLI (read up on it) and is actually noticeably more reliable and less prone to fail. Only issue that can be expensive is haldex maintenance, but no more expensive than fixing something on the benz.

hope this helps!

I have a fully loaded W204 C300 in red, rather underwhelming to drive TBH. My 335i blows it out the water performance wise, but the w204 definitely is a nice ride. Really comfy, more room than in the E90, looks great, and is a great daily driver. Mine has 77k and has been reliable (got it at 69k) but I keep getting a warning about random bulbs being out when they clearly aren’t.

The steering is light with very little feedback, the auto is alright, and the engine is fine but I almost always find myself driving in sport mode. Also, I get terrible mileage in city driving for some reason.

Voting is almost split right down the middle, completely unexpected for me.

FWIW facelift 204's are stupid reliable. Most common repair I can think of is dash rattles on 507's because the suspension is so stiff. And maybe steering locks, but those are pretty rare on facelift models.

FYI a tune in an M276 powered C300 will basically net you a C350 because there are no big hardware or any displacement changes to the engine.

M272 powered cars do have differences in displacement and hardware. M276 does not. M276 is the current, direct injected V6, used from ‘12 and up. M276 is more powerful, more efficient, and more responsive than M272. The current bi-turbo V6 cars (C450, GLE450, etc.) are all M276 powered.

Crazy Germans with their crazy ideas and crazy engineering. Oh, and most websites list the displacement, power and economy of M276 cars as being the same as M272 cars. They are not. 276 is better, more like 270hp on C350 I think, and cars like E350 are more like 300. So I would think a tune coils get a C300 very close to 300hp, but I’m not positive.

The 0-60 requirement tells me that you value performance on some level. This is what happens on a Mercedes-Benz (not sure if AMGs are exceptions):

1. Floor the accelerator pedal

2. ... (ECU thinks about whether to approve your request)

4. Car accelerates and lugs in high gear
