Broke my mower today. It was a John Deere 111 with a Briggs and Stratton 11.5 hp engine. Rod snapped on, I was hoping it was just the drive belt. Probably due to oil starvation as I was mowing my ditch at the time. Guess its time to hit ebay up.

It’s okay — I killed two mowers in three months. Broke one bolt in one, seized the engine in the other. Thank God I buy used Toyotas to drive.

Take a look at the Harbor Freight motors. I repowered my snowblower with one and was very happy with it.

Check Harbor Fright for a new plant. I know a few guys that have had really good luck there.

Yeah, I remember those posts.

I’ll have to check them out. I had found a few on ebay that may be worthy.

I will definitely do that. Thanks for the tip.

or this one possibly

Do you think it would be worthy to try and price out repairing that one, or will the cylinder be too damaged?

It would probably cost more to rebuild than replace.
Is yours Hydro?

No, its a five speed. Classic 1985 model I picked up for $500 when I bought my house 4 years ago. This was at least its second engine.

Oof. It may be worth repowering depending on what used riders go for in your area. A more modern rider won’t be built like that 85 though.

Skip eBay and start searching CL for a Deere 160 or 180 (or 165/185 if you want a hydro). Best lawn tractor Deere ever built. Good runners can be had for under $200 and use a Kawasaki engine, which just beats the shit out of a Balls and Scrotum.

If I had the money I’d just buy a zero turn with a power blower for all my pine needles, but I don’t have the money so as cheap as possible is what I’m going for. Plus this thing is still solid. And I had gotten a really great deal with it.

I will check it out but I doubt I’ll find anything that cheap.

Repower for sure. Northern Tool is another good source for new.

Where do you live? I always enjoy browsing CL for tractors.
