Well it’s beeping. Look up the beep codes.

Context? What did you actually do?

Nothing that I know of.

That’s still not much in the way of context. Do you know what the model of the motherboard is? If those are diagnostic beeps, as E92M3 suggests, they’ll be documented in the motherboard’s manual (or online if you don’t have it).

Does anything happen on the monitor at all? If you have disks with spinning platters, do you hear them spin up? Is the CPU fan spinning? What lights are illuminated on the motherboard - that may be helpful too.

Background? How long since it last worked?

Worked yesterday cpu fan running no disks only a solid amber light nothing on the monitor.

Clearly somebody pulled the fire alarm.

In all reality, though, diagnostic beeps as has been suggested, or hard drive off its spindle (sounds more like a fan hitting a heatsink, but i’m not sure why it would stop then start over rhythmically)

Check the motherboard manual for the diagnostic beeps, like E92M3 said.

If that doesn’t provide any illumination, I’d take out everything besides power supply, CPU, memory, and start testing with any spares I have on hand, not necessarily in that order.

edit: Another thought - look on the board for any swollen / burst / leaking capacitors.

Try just reseating the RAM and check all connections - if you have canned air, blow out every slot that is in use and try again.

I’m assuming your not making it to post/bios. Most commonly going to be power supply start by reseting memory also remove them one at a time to confirm one of them aren’t holding it down. You need to look your boards errors codes up that noise is a bios beep code that will likely tell you exactly what’s up (typically single long beeps/buzz are mem or power issues). If your gungho look up your power supply power output and check for all the needed voltage with a multi meter.

What model is it? (Better yet, what’s the service tag?) I’m guessing OptiPlex 960, but I might be wrong there (and if it’s an Inspiron or something, then I’m way off).

And shoot more video than that, it may take like a minute to get through a beep code pattern.

Also, the 1/2/3/4 lights on the front, are they showing anything when it’s doing this? What’s the power button light doing?

Try reseating the RAM. Sounds like a memory failure.

It's an optiplex 755 I asked this question since on the number 1 is showing on consistently I reseated all the ram but still got nothing.

Remove all RAM, try one DIMM in the slot labeled DIMM 1 (closest to the CPU). See if it works. (Not the DIMM that you tried in the video, obviously, that doesn’t work.) If that fails, try any other DIMMs that you have that are DDR2. If that works, you’ve got bad RAM, replace RAM (or consider getting another machine - a 755 is rather old, obviously).

If that fails, I’d suspect a motherboard failure, but the next thing to try is one DIMM in the slot labeled DIMM 2 (the other one with white release levers), and if that doesn’t work (try all of your DIMMs), try one DIMM in DIMM 3 (black release levers, between the two with white release levers).

If it works in DIMM 2, put all your RAM in DIMM 2 and 4, and realize that your chipset is failing, but still working somewhat. If it works in 3 but not 2, your motherboard is failing, but still working somewhat - put all your RAM in DIMM 3 and 4. Either way, prepare to replace the machine if you can.

Also, I’d guess that the beep code is something along the lines of 1-3-1 through 2-4-4 (probably 1-3-1 through 1-4-4, really), based on the diagnostic LED code. One beep, pause, three through four beeps, pause, one through four beeps.

I had a similar problem. Try removing the CMOS battery and resetting it. Try getting a new CMOS battery, as that can occasionally cause the BIOS not to boot.

Once that is done, your going to need a new motherboard. I found a cheap one on amazon that worked with my processor, and I was able to turn this into a fairly serious mid-life refresh for $400.

If switching around your RAM doesn’t work, then your going to need a new motherboard.
