After a spot of research I now know how one of these contraptions (three speed automatic) works
After rather more research I can figure out this, a four speed pre selector (uses the same principles, more or less)
Don’t ask me to get my head around anything more complicated like an eight speed though. Witchcraft. And elves.

Oh, the epicyclic gear sets are simple enough, the complicated thing is that the second gear train is used to speed up the output of the first gear train by turning its ring gear in the same direction but slower than its sun wheel.. The pre selector does the same and adds a third gear train which speeds up the output of the first gear train a little more. Add a fourth gear set and you can get yourself ten or more gears by mixing and matching them.

I have a Shimano 7 speed hub gear running a belt instead of a chain. Is soooo quiet and never gets my pants dirty. I never ride hard enough to need more gears and so far I’ve yet to miss having a derailleur.
