Anyone here know about Hino 238's? Here’s the story:

Got the oil change done on our delivery truck a couple days ago. Since then it’s been leaking oil reasonably fast, but it looks like old oil. The oil was checked before sending it out this morning and it was full. So, we sent it out, got a call 45 min later that it was losing power and generally being too uncooperative to go on. So... WTF?

Of course, on top of this we can add:

-I slept in this morning and the other guy here missed putting an order on that came in at the last minute last night.

-This is the second truck we’ve got issues with, leaving us with just a pickup to run deliveries in.

-It’s raining. Can’t do said deliveries in said pickup.

EDIT: Turns out it’s the transmission leaking. Nearly dry. The fact that it was black rather than red suggests to me that something more serious than a leak is going on...

That, and there were a couple strokes of luck (though they didn’t seem that way at the time) yesterday.

1, we were running quite late yesterday, to the point of calling our last customer on the list and saying we would bring his stuff today. He insisted they couldn’t wait and said he would stay as late as needed but he had to have it yesterday. Our driver was game so we did it. This order was way too big for the pickup.

2, we had another big order scheduled to go out today that got put off until next week, which leaves us just with stuff that can go on a pickup.

I doubt it, it’s black rather than red and appears to be coming from the area of the pan and dripping down onto the front axle, but like I said oil level wasn’t down.

But hey you probably know more than I do. I was wondering if maybe the turbo wasn’t getting a good oil supply, but that should have shown up sooner. Besides, wouldn’t the turbo pull it’s oil supply from the engine oil? This stuff looks REALLY dirty.

Here’s a Hino 238 for those of us who have never seen or heard of such a beast. Looks like a US market truck. The Hinos I see are very different.

Kinja'd!!!

According to Mr Google they have torque converter automatics, so must be for the Americans.

Turns out you’re right. Trans was nearly dry. I don’t know what happened that turned it black, but I’m guessing there’s something more serious than a simple leak going on here...

if you’re lucky it could be a trans oil cooling line... but why it’s black is another matter.

It looks like someone put engine oil in the trans (based just off colour) but surely that would have caused issues before now?

maybe not...? I would have expected slipping and leaking (from foaming)... but, um, you say the oil was just changed? And it had been leaking since then? Mayhaps some oil-change-monkey did a do-do in your tranmission...

Could be, except that it doesn’t look like CLEAN engine oil. And while it’s dripping pretty quick, I can’t see it emptying itself in a couple days.

It could have been leaking slowly for a while, though, and maybe they disturbed something on the transmission enough to get it leaking faster. But then again since you need fluid pressure for shifting, I don’t see how it could get so low without symptoms. Of course, maybe they did disturb something that’s been working it’s way free ever since and there’s now an oil spot on the highway where it lost it’s shit. Dunno. Our driver (rightly) was more concerned with not taking someone out on his way off the highway that sticking around to see what happened.

Coincidence is usually not actually coincidence though, so you’re probably right with the oil-change-monkey doing some oil-change-monkeying.

engine oil in the trans could strip off all the glaze/gunk/friction-surface from the clutches and brake bands (detergent), not to mention it would probably start to overheat and scorch pretty quick... it’d be black in a hurry. And while running it would leak more than when sitting/iddling due to foaming and pressure build-up... I’m sure that transmission carries about 4x the amount of fluid ACTUALLY needed to run as a heat-sink/margin-of-safety so it might not have been really problematic until it mostly leaked out...

I’m not saying thats definately what happened, but the evidence is kinda damning. What’s the oil in there smell like?

Oh sh*t. Sounds like a real possibility. That said, looks like trans oil can go black, but it means internal damage.

As for the smell, I can’t say I sniffed it.
