"Junkrat aka Rick Sanchez: Fury Road Edition" (realasabass)

I was at a resale shop today and saw an original gold chassis RC10 today (not pictured). They wanted way too much money for it, and it was missing parts. It was my first foray into high quality R/C kits, and I can still remember putting it together on my parents dining room table. I raced my neighbors’ Tamiya Hornet and Frog. I ended up racing 1/12th scale carpet pan car for the most part, some times 1/24th scale slot cars. It’s what really got me into the mechanics of race cars at a young age, setup fundamentals are the same no matter what the scale. Anyone else get some of their love for cars from scale racing?

I never really raced much but I did buy a drift car which is hilarious fun.

playing with the rc cars, you start to ask the other kids WHAT the race is going to be, and where..... then “hold up while i change gears and tires.”

I remember being blown away by the differentials on my TL-01 when I put it together in 2001..

I don’t race, but I do share the love of small scale RCs. I have an Axial Exo, Helion Dominus 10TR, and a roller Losi Mini-T (Which is probably the most race-y RC I own at the moment). I might be getting a Kyosho FO-XX Nitro in the future.

I’m not sure which way it went. I find maintaining and repairing R/C cars far more rewarding than 1:1 scale cars.
I wish I still had a relatively local indoor off road track and the time/money to play. I love racing so much.

The gold chassis version is the RC-10 Championship Edition. It was a special edition that came stock with a bunch of upgraded parts like the Stealth transmission. I have one in the garage.
I bought mine so my cousin and I could waste a summer racing each other. He had a Tamiya Grasshopper. My new RC-10 put his to shame. With friction dampers and an open differential, the little Grasshopper just couldn’t put the power down. His solution? Add more power.
An upgraded motor made the Grasshopper impossible to control. The right rear tire would break loose every time he tried to accelerate, even under ideal conditions. Even if he managed to get it rolling, the first bump would send it spinning out of control.
It was a riot.
We never had a good race. The RC-10 outclassed his car in every way. But we did have a great time playing with cars.

My first high end RC car was also an RC-10. It was a great thing to learn on and have fun with. I never raced my RC’s though, just a lot of backyard bashing.

The picture above is an original RC10, the wheels are 3 piece and the front shocks are shorter than the CE. They did continue to use the gold chassis on the CE, but the rest was different.

Yep, you’re right. The shade of gold was a little different on the CE and the wheels, shock towers, and shocks were also different.

We would go to the beach and race in the sand. It was beautiful to watch the suspension working on my RC10 while the grasshopper was doing what grasshoppers do best - bounce around.

It’s pretty crazy how well that thing is engineered for 1984. Associated was really the first company to offer a truly off the shelf race car. Other kits could be modified to race competently, but those parts weren’t in the box. Then people started modifying this and you could not compete unless you replaced 90% of you car. I always wanted a Yokomo Dogfighter though. Chain driven 4WD buggy, mmmm chain drive.

It was light-years beyond my first R/C car - a Tamiya Sand Scorcher.
The only thing the Scorcher did better was waterproofing. While it wasn’t necessary for racing, it was required for the places I liked to drive.
The worst part about the Scorcher was the ABS body. One rollover on asphalt and you realized that the hours you spent on paint were a waste of time.

The funny thing is the Sand Scorcher was pretty much just a shrunk down baja beetle. Twin beam front suspension, rear engine, plastic torsion-esque rear suspension. ABS bodies were so much work just to scratch it up. Sanding, priming, painting, sanding again. I bought a 1/4 scale nascar kit one time that had an enormous ABS body. That kit taught me that I hate body work at least, and that I am not good at it.

“The funny thing is the Sand Scorcher was pretty much just a shrunk down baja beetle.”
So true. It taught me a lot about how suspension works (and breaks). It also taught me a lot about driving.
ABS was great for pipes, terrible for R/C bodies. I still don’t know how to get deep scratches out of an ABS body without ruining the original curves.
I think this summer will be a great time to break out all the old cars and let my kids have a go at them.

Out of curiosity, how much were they asking for the RC10, and what was it missing?
I ask because I have an original release goldpan roller which I’m considering selling.
