I thought I’d check since experiences change impressions. For me, though I love the current Durango (but like the Grand Cherokee more), I’m super fond of the first generation because 1) My friend drove it (crush at the time...still...) and 2) Cameron Diaz drove one in Something About Mary.
By the way, I don’t remember the 2nd Gen being as attractive as the stock picture below. Maybe time and market changes are causing that truckness to bring sexy back.

I always liked the 1st gen, except for the rear. Never liked the 2nd gen.
I do like the new gen, they look muscular. The Durango looks good in black.

First gen. Second gens were pieces of shit and I've even seen a rusty third gen.

The original Durango in the best looking Durango. The 2nd generation is still hideous, but the latest one is nice, though I’d rather have an Explorer.

First Gen is the best even with its issues. Then the current one.
That pic of the Gen 2 is odd. It actually looks a lot better than I remember.

First and third are great, but give me a first gen 5.9 R/T or Shelby S.P.360 any day.

First gen is awesome. My friend’s dad had one with the 5.9 and he constantly ripped on that thing. It was a blast!
The newest ones are absolutely fantastic IMO. They’re so mean looking in the Citadel trim.

1st is coolest, 3rd is nicest. I’m trying to think of redeeming qualities for the second.
It’s the ugliest.
It has the worst interior.
It rusts the fastest.
Yup can’t think of any.

That’s because it’s a picture of the post-facelift car.
Allow me to refresh your memory.

AHA! That’s more like it!
Thanks!

Didn’t the second gen suffer from build quality issues on the magnitude of British Leyland? They’re daimer-Chrysler products so they have those TIPM modules that will cycle your door locks until the battery goes dead and the like. But only if they didn’t dissolve in your driveway beforehand?

EDIT: the one in the OP is a post-facelift, the white one is the much uglier pre facelift.

The first gen will always be my favourite. My buddy’s dad had one. By the time he was finished with it, there was some drift-related damage from accidentally tapping a post at the Tim Hortons drive through while trying to do a four-wheel drift into it.

Except the hybrid parts are damn near impossible to find. Had a guy who loved his because he could sleep it in and leave it running for heat all night without using up all the gas. He has some hybrid part go bad and it sat for a long time. It's a shame actually.

If you need any more reasons to not like the 2nd gen, their seatbelts are known to fail in rollovers. The buckle will come out for no reason.

The white one is the one I remember. I didn’t know they facelifted it. Guess they had to really. Who buys something that looks like a bloated Tick?

The first one sucks, the 2nd one Sucks so much it created a black hole, and the third one is just meh, who cares?

Mexican Police Durango:
Having seen them in person they are absolutely perfect. I still don’t know why they HAD to have the Citadel trim.

Are you saying that rolling and SUV is no reason? I mean it’s not a good thing, but I’d say that was the reason the seatbelts failed. Amirite?

so much potential that never quite materialized.
sidewinder, by the way.

I am not an automotive engineer but I’m fairly certain that seatbelts are intended to keep you in your seat under all conditions. Just ask my sister-in-law how well the ones worked in her Durango. She was ejected out the drivers side window, and the two in the backseats let go of the thankfully unoccupied car seats.

My response was semifacetious. Obviously, I realize that seatbelts should never let go unless told to.

Ok, just making sure. It’s just a little personal since this happened to my sil.

First gen. They were well built, simple, reliable when maintained properly, had a full frame and a solid rear axle, could tow and had comfortable seating for 7. My parents had an ‘01 4x4 4.7 liter. I drove it from MN to Cape Coral, FL when I was 17 and it even got respectable fuel economy.

First Gen. IMHO the best looking and if you can find one not clapped out, they're an amazing deal for a 3 row people hauler. Sure fuel mileage is fairly abysmal but they cost as much as a gently used pressure washer.

Isn’t Durango a city in Mexico? Or a state?
![]() 05/11/2016 at 18:14 |

State, right on the border with the US.

First and third are the best.
Full disclosure :I have a 2016 model in my driveway.
