I got lucky with Crusty. The Grandson of the original owner updated the speakers.

You’re kind of stuck with head units in that rig. 2 knob or Sawzall?

Cheap speakers with paper cones have a ton of distortion and very poor cone control due to flexing and other things. Higher-end speakers have poly cones which don’t warp as much, allowing for better-controlled and crisper sound.

ahhh. So you seem to know about speakers and audio stuff. So I have a miata with stock head unit. I upgraded the door speakers to some decent pioneer 6.5" and put some sound deadening in the doors. It has tweeters in the doors I dont know if they work and head rest speakers i upgraded.

What are some other cheap upgrades I could do? Would using fatter wire help? Upgrade the head unit? How do I even choose one?
Is using a tape adpater to my ipod make for crappy sound?

would an underseat subwoofer be worth it?

I just want a simple clear stereo with decent bass.

Tape adapters always make for crappy sound. Your best and easiest bet is to rip out the stock head unit and install a matched head unit, in this case a Pioneer. That will give you far more audio adjustability, and a proper iPod input (don’t use Bluetooth audio) to play your tunes. An underseat sub would be neat, but would give your or your passenger a fairly rigorous massage, and you’d have to run all the wires and whatnot. I hope this helps!
