It managed a month and 2 days without issues.
While driving around today, at one point I went over a speed bump. That’s when all the issues started. Because I had to slow down considerably to negotiate the bump I had the clutch in while going over it, but once I wanted to give the car a little gas to smoothly accelerate out, nothing happened. The engine was working at slightly elevated idle revs and pressing the throttle pedal only slowed the motor down. After a few kicks of the gas the engine got back to normal(ish). At that point I just assumed that as the car hopped up and down the engine got slightly flooded, and once it burns through the excess fuel it’ll be fine.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t so.
From then on whenever the engine is coming down to idle from higher revs it either stalls or barely manages to hold onto a very low idle. Also, whenever there’s engine braking involved it starts to sneeze, or at higher revs even backfire in a very loud manner. Also, holding speed is difficult, even when I’m keeping the gas pedal perfectly still (it’s very stiff so it’s very easy to avoid small movements) the car bucks, accelerates, surges and slows down.
Ehhh.
I assume something’s buggered in the carb. Gonna need to ask a specialist to have a look at it next week. So much for driving it this weekend despite the weather being awesome. :(

That’s probably longer than it made it from the factory without a problem!

Thing is, at the moment I can actually drive it to the mechanic. I doubt that’d still be the case if I attempted to fix it. :P

Well, drive to the mechanics and attempt to fix it. If it works you’re good and if it doesn’t then you’re already at the mechanics.

That must be a new record for a Fiat!

maybe the distributor twisted slightly (when you went over the bump) throwing the timing off?

There’s no distributor. It has an electronic ignition system.

really? well then, I’d guess something either with the throttle linkage or yep the carb. Keep us posted on what you find as the root cause & solution

Oh noes! Maybe you’ll have to start learning the trade for future repair instances! :P
