Firewrx’ C250 nightmare reminded me of my co-worker. She has a black E92 like the one in the picture, sweet little coupe that stands out a bit between all the boxy stuff in our parking lot. That is when she actually drives it to work and not some loaner.
I started this job 8 months ago and as far as I can remember she always had problems with it. Seems like it would go into limp mode, fix itself, go into limp mode, rinse and repeat. Her BMW dealer fired the parts cannon at it to no avail. She barely made it a whole work week without arriving in a different courtesy car again.
Sadly, I can’t provide you with more details on the year/engine, parts they changed etc... as the teachers’lounge started filling with BMW jokes and she just doesn’t take any questions about that matter seriously anymore.
The newest development is that they made her an offer too good to refuse on a new car. So basically the only BMW dealer on the island of Rügen admitted defeat and they are now trying to get rid of this problem without creating much of a fuss.
And here I am thinking about getting an out of warranty used Bimmer as my next car when the only BMW shop on the island seems to be less than brilliant.

My E38 740i Sport has a broken rear strut, and a small engine problem
Still runs strong at 258k miles as of last night (258,003 right now)
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

I’ve got an E39. It seems that the BMWs just before the Bangle era are the most reliable longterm.

It seems that BMW are either the most reliable cars ever, or absolute money pits. My friends 740i was the was the best car ever, but my E46 burned money faster than its oil.

My E92 335i and E90 328i have both been fairly solid.. Broken charge pipe on the 335i at 67k and replaced the rear main seal to stop a small leak on the 328i at 83k.

Sounds like a smart dealer.

I have had my E92 almost exactly a year, with no problems at all. Preventative maintenance. And a warranty.

I have had my ‘09 e92 328i almost 8 months and have driven it 15k miles. The only issues so far have been replacing the coils and valve cover gasket. Aside from that, it’s been a great car.

How are these cars to maintain in general? They’re absolutely gorgeous and would make an excellent cruiser, and also happen to be at probably the bottom of the price curve. There is a 740il on BAT right now and I was looking through the comments to gauge potential issues - sounds like there are some recurring issues to watch out for? Of course its a BMW so it’ll cost more to fix than a Corolla, but in general would you call it a reliable car?

No. I wouldn’t call it reliable
