I agree that the purchase price on some of these vehicles does make them affordable to purchase, but not to own. I have an M5 that’s quite similar to the one in the article and paid a similar amount. However, I got hit with a $7500 repair bill a month ago when alternator decided to mix it up a bit and decided it was now going to be a 20 volt car.... before dropping back down to being a 10.3 volt car. It boiled the battery, roasted the ECU, and the ridiculously priced alternator requires that you remove the radiator to get to it from underneath the car.

A friend of mine had his window broken on his Range Rover by a crackhead and it being a Range Rover it needed a new window motor that was $2500 in addition to the window and the labor.

I’ve never owned a Rolls Royce but I can only imagine.

However, some of the cars on the list might be a little more reasonable like the Chrysler 300 or the Audi A8. I think the Porsche might be fairly reasonable provided that the previous owner replaced the IMS bearings.

It’s an interesting mix of cars and I think it’s also a pretty interesting mix of NPoCP. I can tell you first hand that if you have $25,000 you can buy anything on the list, but if it breaks you might need an extra $10k if you ever want to drive it again.

Surprised the Continental GT is not there. That is the ultimate “I have money” car.

Honestly? I thought much of that list was in LOL Land, exactly for the reasons you’ve stated. Sorry about that alternator thing... Yucky.

M car on a budget? Is it April fools day or something. My E90 decided that it wanted to eat an $1100 engine part at the same time it needed rear tires, $3750 and a week later, I got it back.

That is the dumbest and most inaccurate list I have ever seen. Budget balling by purchase price only. The M5 will consume $5k a year easily, if not more. The Caddy may be good but is old so you never know what’ll break, and you’ll have to pull your own fuel tender around. The 996 is very reliable once the IMS bearing has been done as you pointed out, but be prepared for high service costs. No Rolls Royce is more expensive than a cheap one. The A8 is a nice car, but does not age gracefully.

I had forgotten to mention that tidbit that most people would not know until owning a car like an M — if you need a new alternator, you’ll be car-less the better part of a week to have the work done... if you’re lucky. If you’re going to the dealer you’ll likely end up with a loaner, but if it’s an indy shop, nope. You plunk down a sizable chunk of coin for a fancy car and now you’re riding the bus.

When did owning a Lincoln Blackwood or a Chrysler 300 ever make people think “Oh yes, (s)he’s got money I’m sure.” Those cars make me personally think “Oh, they think Lincoln Navigators are the epitome of class and trucks are tough so they bought the shitty combination” or “They really hate having visibility out of their car”.

That’s why you have 2 BMWs? But seriously, they were like yeah that part has to come from Germany, we don’t stock it. Happened twice now, once with that part and the other time I needed a new bumper cause I kinda accidentally put it into my garage wall, long shitty story there

My 540i has never been temermental or expensive at all. I bought from a guy who got the ridiculous carmax warranty. The cars is from 2000 and it pretty much just came out of warranty and the previous owner was super on top of maintenance. Not a dead pixel even. Proper M cars don’t seem to be quite so reliable. Or maybe they are. It just hurts more when something breaks.

My M3 has been pretty damn reliable, apart from that one instance, haven't had the 128i long enough to really test its reliability
