Two assholes tried to sprint across the street in front of me while driving the work Yaris today. Came from between two parked cube vans, I was doing 50km/h, had to brake hard enough that ABS engaged on perfectly dry pavement. I got a disgruntled “why is there a car driving down the road” look as thanks for not seriously injuring both of them, which would’ve happened if I was texting like every other driver in North Van. I’m pretty used to entitled assholes strolling across the less busy streets where I work, but this was a really close one. I had next to no warning, add barely enough room to stop. They also did nothing to avoid me, except start jogging a little faster into my path. I don’t get the mentality that allows someone to behave like that. I never, ever assume that there just won’t be cars if I’m crossing the road. I sure as hell don’t assume they can and will stop for me either. Anger and confusion aside, that was not fun. I pulled over and took a minute, coming that close to really hurting or killing people, whoever may be at fault, is enough to shake a person up.

You ever drive a modern car with thick ass A-pillars and a pedestrian hides behind your A-pillar and starts walking as your crawling and the A-pillar and the pedestrian move at exactly the same speed to cover your view until 1 foot away from your hood?
Yeah, that fuckin sucks.

Yeah, that’s happened with the Yaris. The C-pillars are also big enough, that I missed an entire car, totally cut him off even after shoulder checking twice because we were going identical speeds and he just stayed perfectly in that blind spot

I almost ran a lady down in a grocery store parking lot last week, only it would’ve been completely my fault. I didn’t see her for whatever reason, she kind of jumped back and I slammed to a stop. I had my window down and apologized profusely, which she was gracious enough to accept.

I find it’s a lot easier for people to relate to others mistakes when even the windows aren’t a factor, just that much separation can make people jump to anger instead of understanding

Indeed. If somebody does something stupid in traffic but follows it up with an apology wave, I am more than happy to respond with an “all be forgiven” wave in reply. We, as people, screw up. It’s going to happen. It’s those who are to oblivious or arrogant to recognize their wrongdoings (or those who do wrong intentionally) that get my goat.

When people start jaywalking and acting like they have a right to do so I cut as close as possible without actually hitting them. I do the same with the people who pull out and cut into traffic. It helped when I was driving my Caprice wagon with a really loud exhaust, as soon as someone started stepping out I would floor it. 9 times out of 10 they would change their mind.
This mentality came from living in Denver, where people will walk across the road without looking and fully expect you to stop for them. Doesn’t matter if it’s on a packed street during rush hour or a busy road at two in the morning with no lights. In 2013 or 2014 it got so bad that there was at least 1 pedestrian/cyclist accident on the news every day. People were all up in arms about making the roads safer until one brave reoprter revealed that 75% or so of the accidents were the pedestrians/cyclists fault.

I do that if I can see them coming and can time it safely, and if they’re being a dick. These ones were invisible until they were practically in front of me, so it was either stand on the brake or have a grille full of human

Yeah, scaring them is good, hitting them is bad. It’s always makes my heart jump when something pops out from parked cars and hitting them in a work vehicle would have been 10 times the mess.

Yeah, I’m already dealing with one accident with that car, I sure as hell don’t need another one

I HATE people who just sit in your blind spot. Especially when it's snowing.

Well yesterday I learned that there’s a special segment of the internet who believe the term is “jailwalking.”

Right? I don't sit in people's blind spots, I feel like it's not that much to ask for people to not sit in mine

Maybe they’re the same people who stand on line, rather than standing in line.
