Kinja'd!!!2 Kinja'd!!! 24

Trying to knock out my 40K mile service on the motorbike.

I was working in the garage with the radio on, complaining to myself about how awkward the oil filter was, and why I can’t ever seem to remove it without any mess, etc... etc.. reading my manual to see what was next.....

Kinja'd!!!

Then I put the bike in the air so I could start torquing fasteners, and doing the other bits of service. I thought I would take a look at my rear disk, since there had been a vibration for the last few months.

As I was turning the rear tire by hand to watch the brake disk, I found this.

Kinja'd!!!

I knew the tire was almost done, but didn’t expect to see that.

Kinja'd!!!

This was the tire that we took on the 4500 mile !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I looked at it a few months ago, and it looked pretty good.

I was hoping to finish the service yesterday, and decide if I needed a brake disk or not before I ordered the wheel-off parts. I really didn’t need a tire until the end of the month. I was hoping to ride it untll the parts came in.

Nope.

I dropped what I was doing and ordered the stuff for the tire/brakes after seeing that Hamilton bald spot.

Kinja'd!!!

And there it sits waiting for parts. I feel a little better since it’s raining all week.

Kinja'd!!!

Aren’t motorcycles fun?

There’s a bike that parks at my library that is way worse than that. I’ll grab a picture tomorrow.

Pro tip: Aluminum foil. Pull off a nice long piece, double it over a time or two, fold into a V-shape, and use it to create an oil river from under the filter to your drain pan.

No mess that way.

I have one of those flexible funnels and have tried to do the same thing.

Never works. :(

I was an hour and a half by freeway from home and noticed a giant nail in mine. It was length ways into the tyre and I couldn’t tell if it was bent or just angled. The head was ground down to flush with the tread, tyre didn’t seem to be soft so I manned up and prayed the whole way home.

Grabbed a set of pliers and pulled it out. Not through. It followed along inside the tread blocks. That tyre lasted most of the season.

Oil change on an 1982 goldwing right? Gotta keep those classics maintained for future generations.

85 Silver wing?

Just kidding BTW. I know I get a chuckle out of saying, “Nope. It’s a Honda.” I like to give back to the guys who like to go a little slower and take their time.

I did have one of those, too. I used to call it my “Hardly-Davidson” when people asked what it was.

Much better to realize the tire was done now rather than later as you’re going around a curve at 70mph.

I walked passed it on the way out of the house this morning, and saw that there was a drip on my clean floor under the oil filter. Even after cleaning it up, I still couldn’t get it all.

I’m convinced that a good percentage of Harley oil leaks are just leftover oil from their last oil change.

mine is inconvenient, one must articulate their arm with an extra elbow or two around the usually hot intake, up against the firewall. The last time I had the engine out it was clear that each time I had removed the filter it leaks all down the backside of the engine.

annoying. mostly because they know it has to be done regularly, how on earth is oil filter location on all engines better thought out

This was me for the past two weeks. Motorcycles are fun, when you can ride them instead of working on them.

There’s another one I have not documented yet.

I remember the o-ring at the base of the canister being a PITA, but it’s been a while.

Someday.

LOL, yeah.. They’re about the same as a Camry when you’re buying parts and fixing them.
