This is so much better looking than the new Malibu. The new interior is a home run but the exterior styling is pitiful. The new Malibu looks far smaller than it really is, almost compact-car like. This older design looks BIG. It has presence. It’s unapologetic and fairly aggressive with the swept-back headlights and blunt front end. All of the lines are strong and angled aggressively, with the suggestion of hips towards the rear.
Compare to this. This is a weak design. What the hell is up with that downward swoosh on the doors? It’s completely at odds with the strong beltline creases, the upward slice from the bottom of the door up through to the rear bumper, and forward rake of the beltline. The “flat line across the grille and headlights” theme continues from the Camaro, Colorado and Cruze but is very poorly executed with tiny, squinty headlights, and the imposing three-box design was tossed in favor of a hatchback-but-not-really profile that looks more like an economy compact (I get a whole lot of “Chrysler 200" out of it, which is a Very Bad Thing) than a mid-sized sedan.

I like it. The old one is dull and boring.

The new Malibu looks so sad. The crease that starts from just below the side mirrors and falls down towards the rear wheel arch makes it seem even more depressing. Like it lost the will to live.

The new one looks better. Though the Chevy commercials where they have people looking at it saying it reminds them of an audi or BMW are dumb

YES! Precisely! Fuck with the headlights a bit and get rid of that crease and it’d be 100x better. Still not fantastic, but less like a depressed Chrysler 200.

I love how designs that aren’t horridly overstyled are “dull and boring” nowadays.

This title is coming in assuming they didn’t screw one up.
The funny thing is that they’re really good at design. I swear they spend most of their money on design and engine development. Everything else is an afterthought. But their designs take the current zeitgeist, distill it down, and crank it to 11, which is why they look so sweet initially and so terrible a short time later (not to mention almost everything falls apart around the engine).

I like the new design. The only thing wrong is the badge placement, but in person even that doesn’t look too bad.
The ORIGINAL last gen was good looking, but too bland and rounded. Like the taillights though.
The REFRESHED last gen is just ugly.

No joke, in the first picture of the new one, I actually thought the car had been in a front-end collision at first glance.

The newer one isn’t the best, I’ll give it that, but it’s a Malibu. Who cares? It’s the kind of car you buy when you don’t know how to research cars.
Look at the Impala, and most any new models coming out (Altima, Civic, Prius, and the Mazda 6). If that old Malibu stuck around I’d give it a year before people started calling it dated. They have to keep the whole lineup looking current.
If the old style Malibu came out in 2008 it’d be a good looker then and come around to retirement about now, but Chevy took it’s time getting to it.

Honest question, do a lot of people drive these, at least people who didn’t pick it up at Enterprise or Hertz?
I'm not sure if I don't see these in my area or if I just don't notice them.

Too bad Chevy didn’t take design cues from the Prius. :(

I think the new one looks cool in the commercials...until they put the badge back on it. I have nothing against Chevy, I just really think the bowtie screws up the entire front end of this car.

Except the old one was shitty. Like, I wouldn’t even let my mom consider one shitty. A decent (and that’s what it is at best) design only goes so far. Not only does the new one look better and leaner and more hunkered down, it isn’t cramped inside and is worlds better all around.

From the second I saw a new Malibu, my first thought was “oh come on, who made Marvin into a car!?!?!?!”
And ditto *sneaks off to kat.cr*...

It's possible to make a simply-designed car look good. Just look at the new volvos, jags, landys, and the continental. The reason slant called it boring is because it is, in fact, boring. (Sorry for the fp-style provocative tone)

I have to respectfully disagree. I can’t articulate into words how much I hate the old Malibu. It’s such a pathetic looking car to me. It’s like they forgot to style it. When I look at older cars (early 2000's) I always see the areas where they didn’t bother with the styling. And I see that with the entire car! They at least bothered to style the new one, even if I don’t love it.

But the old one
is
boring. The Volvo S60, Mazda 3, and Cadillac CT6 (for example) aren’t horridly overstyled or boring. You have to have a balance and Chevy went too far in the simple direction. The old Malibu is like a Lexus antidote.
