A Lenovo Thinkpad T450 that’s less than a year old.
It was locked, super dirty, covered in stickers, had a Chinese version of Windows 7 on it, and was stuffed to the gills with random bloatware and crap on its hard drive. Using google translate I learned it use to belong to a guy who moved out of my building a few months ago. Not knowing what kind of sketchy shit and malware was on it, I formatted the hard drive and installed Ubuntu. It’s not the most amazing thing in the world with an i5-5200U (2.2 GHz), 8GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, but the price was right. Only problem is I need to pick up a charger, I borrowed a friends to get this thing running. I’ve never used Linux before, anything I need to know or any programs I should download?

Not usually, but I always seem find cool stuff sitting at the top of the dumpster. Got a 50 foot reel of Monster speaker wire and some speakers the other week.

Chromium. They work fine out of the box for basic use, nothing to really add, unless you want to do something specific, then you can open the Software Manager and just search for what you want to do, and it suggests a lot. Synaptic Package Manager is just a more complex version, but does the same thing overall.

I see a fingerprint reader there, I’m not sure if anyone’s ever bothered to make Ubuntu drivers for those.

Yeah, I was curious about that. I don’t know how to go about getting that working.

As far as programs, if you do any illustration or image editing you need GIMP. It’s the gold standard for people who don’t want to pay for Photoshop.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Run that in a command line, easiest way to make sure the thing is fully upgraded in one fell swoop.
Complete side note, How’s life? How’s the Formula car doing? Good to see you post again, have a killer rest of your semester.

Sounds like a great time to get a 120gb or 240gb SSD for a fresh copy of SpyWare 10, sorry Windows 10.

Cool, thanks! It’s finals week finally so I’m almost done for the year. Formula competition is in 10 days or so and the car is nowhere near completed which is pretty typical for most teams I’m sure.

I’d recommend codeacademy.com fit a bash tutorial. Bash is arcane and ridiculously complex, but it’s worth learning, and the code academy intro will get you up to speed really fast. You won’t be a bash guru, but you’ll know the difference between ls and top , and will be a lot better equipped to navigate the forums if you need specific help.

PS unless you really need it, I’d probably not bother until you’re more comfortable with all the Linux shit.

Steam for Linux will give you access to some games, wine for Windows programs that you can’t live without, libre office, Spotify, chrome for sites that don’t like Firefox (cough, Netflix).
