Honest question. Do you think being an enthusiast would be a benefit in that line of work? Would only certain brands and marquees benefit or would it help in general?

No. Because you wouldn’t let anyone leave with a boring car or a bad deal.

I've never met an enthusiast salesman.

Some of the best salesman we’ve ever worked with are true Gearheads

Well that depends on the enthusiast. Being a car salesman has nothing to do with being an enthusiast. At all. It has do do with people. You could know everything about what you’re selling but still be a shitty salesman, but a great salesman doesn’t need to know anything about cars. A great salesman only needs to know how to keep asking questions. As long as you’re asking questions, you control the conversation. The longer you control the conversation, the more your chances of closing the deal go up. Only one of the top 3 salesman at my stepdad’s dealerships has intimate knowledge of cars. But that comes second to knowing how to work a conversation.

No.

I did it for a while and being an enthusiast only came in handy on two out of 25 deals at two different stores. (Toyota and Chevy)

It is a fun gig if you can hack it though.

Oh yes, having the proper mentality is everything. I’m a banker and it’s a very similar field, some people have great financial knowledge but aren’t good at getting that mortgage. However, financial knowledge helps a lot. I was wondering if being an enthusiast is helpful in the field, if it could separate you from the generic salesman

Depends: do you mean an oppo enthusiast, or an FP enthusiast?

Only if you can either turn that enthusiasm off 90% of the time, or use it to excite customers. But most will be bored by the things that excite us oppos.

I’ve noticed that most enthusiasts hate most cars.

Yes, because I’m aware of a good example. A guy at Ramsey Subaru in NJ moves basically all the WRXs in the tri-state region because he connects via forums and gives discounts and shit.

I did it for about a year. I think it helped. Yeah 90% of the time I was selling boring cars, like Ford Escapes, and Jeep Grand Cherokees. But it helped because 1, I knew what I was talking about. Because I find learning about cars interesting 2. I could get people excited about car buying, because I was excited for them. I love buying a new, to me, car. So my goal was always to get that customer excited.

I once convinced a customer to buy a manual Focus hatchback when we came in looking at an automatic Avenger. And I would haven made more money selling the Avenger.

Yeah it can suck, a lot, but every once and awhile you get a fun customer who buys, and it makes your day. Plus you get to test drive lots of stuff which is fun.

No. Not at all. Sometimes it’s bad to know too much. I’d make a terrible salesman because I know too much. I’d either confuse the customer or have them buy something else. Though I think I could sell Mazda’s.

An enthusiast would make a good product specialist, but again, that position also requires the ability and patience to show the features, not just knowledge about them.

It did not help me at all. Granted all the potential buyers where I was selling were subprime.

I think it depends on the brand you’re selling. The dealer group I’m part of allows me to sell things like Toyota and VW, and being an enthusiast there doesnt help at all. However my main brand, MINI, being an enthusiast helps because most MINI people are car people as well. I also find that most Alfa Romeo people are always enthusiasts, but not so much for Maserati
