It’s one of those thingies that you guys are obsessed with. Oh, and by the way, take a guess at what I’m driving.

It’s a mint Defender 90. I'm taking it off-island for a customer who wants it repainted. It’s an automatic 1997 (one of the last ones sold in the U.S.) with not even 40k miles on it. The customer also has an older 5-speed 110.

I could tell. I could SMELL it. How uncomfortable is it with an autobox?

Eh, not as terrible as you’d expect. I’ve driven much worse transmissions before.

If anything it’s safer to drive than the manual what with the brake pedal being where you’d expect the clutch to be.

The driving position is terrible though. I’m crammed up against the door and can barely move my left arm and somehow the steering wheel is STILL way to the left of my centerline. The seat doesn’t go back far enough, and the pedals are way too close.

Are the pedals cramped on the LHD versions? I know the passenger footwell on the RHD models feels quite narrow compared to the driver side.

Sorry, missed your edit. This doesn't surprise me, as mentioned above the passenger side is tighter than the driver side, and it obviously wasn't changed for the LHD versions.

Not especially. With a clutch pedal, yeah, but mostly I’m just wishing they were a good 6 inches further back in the footwell.

That kit is so crazy expensive...would rather pay the defender premium.

You learn to adapt to the upright-and-right-angled-legs driving position! I'm 6'4" and it's second nature now, took a while to get to that point though. A hint if you're tall, crank the seat back almost bolt upright and slide the seat base right back to the rear bulkhead.

The house we are renting on Nantucket (our house has a renter in it) has a garage with a Yellow 97 D90 Auto ST. Then we just decorated the 109 for the Daffodil parade tomorrow.

We spend summers here, then as much as we can in the off season. My mom in the past has lived out there year round, and she is trying to make that happen again.
