You have to bite your tongue from saying something extremely disrespectful to the retired Vietnam Vet, who has the time to follow you into you office parking lot to say, “You keep driving like that and you’ll get people killed.”
Look dude I’m sorry you got mad I overtook you in the traffic circle and continued to do 50mph on the four lane parkway over the interstate and then didn’t stop at a yield sign (when no traffic was coming) like I suppose you would have liked me too.
This is yet another reason I do not put any self identifying stickers or license plates on my cars.
I took the blue line through the traffic circle left lane to left lane on exit. This is not a very good diagram. I looked for that NASCAR v Rally v Formula 1 traffic circle image from awhile back but could not find it.

I’m not sure yield means anything anymore. I’ve been increasingly noticing people turning left at “yield on green” with people making a right on green. What’s worse, is I’ve been increasingly seeing the people making a right stop to let the people making a left go.

In my hometown, there’s a double roundabout interchange that looks almost exactly like this:
It was built maybe 10 years ago now and I remember people losing their collective shits when they realized they didn’t know how to go through a roundabout.

Pffft. They just put in a diverging diamond near me. I would KILL for just a traffic circle.
This is an interchange that, when used correctly, requires one to temporarily drive on the other side of the road. I haven’t been through it once yet where someone wasn’t going through in the wrong direction.

They recently put a roundabout in my town. It’s known as the Circle of Death. No one here can navigate it. It’s two lanes (which honestly seems to cause most all of the confusion)
I literally watched a lady sit and yield for a minute (watching the flow of traffic) and then still turn THE WRONG WAY and nearly take out a pickup truck. My friend got sideswiped because the guy didn’t know how to hold a lane. It now holds a record for the most accidents at an intersection.

I know roundabouts are ingrained into any driver outside the U.S. because they are a recent thing in many parts of the U.S. but how come so many haven’t learnt how they work yet?
Also if that was a two lane roundabout and you overtook someone that’s a silly thing to do, on a three lane roundabout that is okay but still to keep in mind that although the car in lane one may sling shot into lane two after exiting the roundabout.

The TL;DR: It’s a cognitive bias which drives un- or under-skilled individuals to overestimate their competence with respect to their peers. Also, highly-skilled individuals overestimate the competence of their peers. The former occurs because the self-assessment comes from the same bad data (the unskilledness) as the skill itself. One doesn’t know that one doesn’t know. The latter occurs because skilled individuals don’t perceive the difficulty of their own acts, and assume others have a similarly easy time.
Also, longest TL;DR ever. Sorry.

I wonder how many decades or centuries it will take for Americans to learn how to properly build and travel through roundabouts.

There’s one something like this in my hometown, and it’s part of a highway entrance/exit and is also near a school, so twice a day is backed up with school buses. It’s a nightmare, even in an area where roundabouts are very common.
It’s also near the DMV, so it was (at least when I was in high school) part of the driving test route if the test administrator was in a nasty mood.

But diverging diamonds are efficient. It’s not the intersections fault that people are too dumb to follow signs and line markings.

Many of the roundabouts in MA are huge rotaries that have fallen out of favor in road design.
Also a disturbing number seem to have traffic lights, defeating the point.

Carmel, Indiana has replaced most of their highway interchanges with roundabouts sort of like this (it’s actually just single roundabouts that have been pinched to go over a single bridge in the middle).

So many people seem not to know the difference between stop and yield. And then I have to slam on my brakes because they are stopping for no reason (while I’m looking to the side, and seeing that not only is it safe for them to go, it would be safe for me as if they hadn’t suddenly stopped).
Shane MacGowan's Teeth

Diverging diamonds in theory are efficient (so are traffic circles). However, when’s the last time you saw one? Putting an incredibly non-intuitive intersection, that actively goes against all the traffic rules you’ve learned and practice every day, on one of the busiest highways in the country, in one of the fastest growing cities in the country, with minimal signage, means that there are always new people who haven’t seen it before, and have no idea what to do. When in doubt, people follow their instincts and basic principles. A basic principle of driving is “stay on the right side of the road”.
I understand that it could be a good thing. I also understand that the real world is not a flow model in a lab. People have to understand intersections to use them efficiently- therefore an oddball type is automatically going to take a hit to both efficiency and safety, unless you can guarantee that everyone encountering it is educated- which is just about impossible.

I’m assuming you’re expecting the one pulled by the police is in the red and it’s a one lane exit? If it was a two lane exit and all drivers adhered to correct lane discipline then apart from the wrongful entry indication and lack of exit indication I see nothing wrong with it. I would expect the driver in the left hand lane to use their own lane and then check mirrors and blind spot as usual when changing lanes, just as they would anywhere else when changing lanes.
facw
> Shane MacGowan's Teeth
04/27/2016 at 11:53 | 0 |
See the “stay on the right side of the road” thing shouldn’t be a problem though, because you are on what is essentially a one-way street, or divided highway. You need to shape the road intuitively (going over the crosses should feel like going straight as opposed to changing onto the left side), but done right I’m amazed anyone ends up going the wrong way (since it requires turning on another street, probably marked with do not enter and wrong way signs).

The reason is that I could probably count the number of roundabouts I’ve ever driven through in Maryland on two hands. DC has a few more though, but not that many Marylanders drive downtown. In my experience, Virginia doesn't have any more than Maryland.

Most of DC’s roundabouts have traffic lights. But we are talking huge mothers of roundabouts. Without them, I'd be a little nervous to go through the roundabouts myself.

It is true that I think the only one I’ve driven is the I-95/I-695 interchange NE of Baltimore (since partially replaced with a big flyover to make way for toll lanes on I-95.) Of course that being a highway interchange, you can’t mess it up since the two directions cross with bridges rather than with an intersection.

There are so very few roundabouts in the US that few people have a chance to get experience with them. They were never mentioned in my drivers training books and still are not in many states. Drivers unaccustomed to them freak when they come to one. Frankly they should do away with them all or put in a lot more, one way or the other. Though I have driven many times in the UK, when I come upon one in the US (like once a year) I forget what I’m supposed to do.

I’m glad that everyone was cool in this situation, but following someone to work to express displeasure with their driving is a similarly Foolish (I like the idea of capitalizing it, tbh) action. Road rage is a real thing. Unfortunately, America isn’t always great that way.
If someone takes it upon themselves to insert their opinion into my day, I see no reason not to engage in a full exchange of opinions, if “doing their thing” means we are gonna have a conversation.

Hey it’s your reaction, do what you want, but other peoples reactions are just as valid.
Road rage issue: Why would you escalate the situation by not biting your tongue? If someone called you out on your driving?
Your point was a good one about road rage but if he hadn’t passed him then none of it would of happened.., because the passer thought the passee?,(Spelling, Right word?), was going too slow.
Was the Passer going to the Hospital because of Him/other had a Life threatening injury?
A gun to his head?
Somebody had to pass someone else for whatever reason. If the passer didn’t make a choice about driving the way he did then I understand.
If he thought, “Hey this guy is driving too slow for me” then I see tit for tat.
The person passed thought it was unsafe. All opinions
