This is what at least 14 years of lint looks like. And there’s still more stuck to the sides that I can’t scrape off. I finally got the brush all the way down to the bottom by using the stick end, not the brush end, to keep poking away at the clog, loosening it. Now I’ve got to put the duct and the dryer back together.
Don’t let this happen to you, Oppo. Clean your ducts!
Now, time to tackle the freezer. It’s cold, but it’s not freezing. But I’ve got to move a bunch of shit in the garage to get to it. That was supposed to be today’s job, but the dryer came first.
A huge H/T to all those who offered suggestions and moral support. I really appreciate it. Hopefully, there’s somebody out there who knows something about freezers...

Good thing you got that unclogged. That was a real fire hazard.

Hurry and draw a puking face on it or something! Don't let a potential meme get away.

WOW
Good work man
And how come none of your appliances do the specific thing they’re supposed to?!
Dryer doesn’t heat things
Freezer doesn’t freeze things

I’ve go no PS skills. Maybe one of my Oppo colleagues could take care of that. I’ve got to put everything back together.

Good job, now I’m off to check my dryer vent.

Please do. And take the access panel off your dryer and look for lint inside. You can vacuum it out.

I’ll bet the coils on your freezer are dirty.

Good! Now that you can do so without burning down your house, I encourage you to set that lint on fire.

Grody.

The defrost timer in my freezer broke multiple times last year causing the coil to freeze over and become ineffective.

That’s what I’m expecting. This will be my first time delving into this appliance, though. But I’ve got to rearrange the garage to get to it. :/

To the max.

Sounds like fun, but it’s probably destined for the trash can.

That’s what I’m hoping. But that’s tomorrow’s project.

I keep my ducks very clean.
(Glad you got the job done)!

Well, it’s not done. I have to put the ducT together. And my dryer is in about 15 pieces spread around the house. I’ve got to get that put back together. But thanks, nonetheless.

I replaced my dryer belt after it split. Upon this, though, I discovered that the felt belt that keeps the lint build up from going into the dryer had worn out almost completely. I ordered the felt and will put that on this weekend. I figure it will take an hour in total, most of the time spent scraping off the the old glue and felt remnants and vacuuming out the lint that managed to get into the machine.
But, yeah, I need to get a lint brush and clean the vents, too.

Piece of cake for you.

You should be able to make a complete shirt out all that.

“Hopefully, there’s somebody out there who knows something about freezers...”
Pro tip: do not use the same procedure on the freezer.

A very long, hot, sweaty piece of cake. Thanks.

Mine probably needs a new felt washer, too. It’s building up lint too quickly inside the box. But that will be for another time.

Damn. I need to do that! I’m going on 16ish years. I think I’m gonna hire someone though as mine runs under the house so there’s no easy way to get to the pipe.
As a related note, I just recently rebuilt my first transmission. On a washing machine..

Yipes! Glad you finally got it done.

Thanks! Just got the dryer buttoned up, and am in the process of cleaning up my mess. There is so much in this house that is half-assed and shoddily built. The pipe that comes out of the wall that connects to the dryer is, for some reason, bigger than any standard sized vent hose on the market by about 1/16". It takes me longer to get the vent hose connected, with more cussing, than it takes to reassemble the whole dryer. I sounded like the father in Christmas Story. Now I know where my boys learn all their bad words. Around here, we call them “Daddy words.”

I have only done a minor repair on the washing machine (replaced the clutch dogs on the agitator when it stopped spinning). It’s remarkable how simple these older machines are. And everything I know I learned on YouTube. It just goes to show that with a little knowledge, a basic set of tools, and some courage, you can fix most anything in your house.
Except electrical stuff. I don’t mess with that.
![]() 04/26/2016 at 20:07 |

Even the electrical stuff is fine if you have an electrician buddy check your work. That’s kind of how I feel about working on my own brakes on a car as well - If I do my own work, I know it’s done right. I may have trust issues.
![]() 04/26/2016 at 20:10 |

Not as bad as yours but still enough lint that my dryer should perform better.

Nothing wrong with having an expert check your work. It just makes sense.
![]() 04/26/2016 at 20:18 |

Good on ya. I’m hoping that my dryer starts woking a whole lot better. It would pretty much only dry if I put it on timed dry. The major settings always left the clothes wet. I’m drying a load right now. We’ll see how it goes!

Having worked in the construction industry for a long time, I can say that most houses are built with the same level of care and attention to detail. I know the feelings very well.
