More diesel woes

Just when you thought you had enough of all this, the German government have, according to Autocar magazine, found that this little lot have blotted their copybooks too because at lower temperatures the emissions equipment is designed to be less effective.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0; Audi A6 V6 3.0; Chevrolet Cruze 2.0; Dacia Sandero 1.5; Fiat Ducato 3.0; Ford C-Max 1.5; Ford C-Max 2.0; Hyundai ix35 2.0; Hyundai i20 1.1; Jaguar XE 2.0; Jeep Cherokee 2.0; Land Rover Range Rover 3.0; Mercedes-Benz V250 Bluetec 2.0; Nissan Navara 2.5; Opel Insignia 2.0; Opel Zafira 1.6; Porsche Macan 3.0 V6; Renault Kadjar 1.5; Renault Kadjar 1.6; Suzuki Vitara 1.6; Volkswagen Amarok 2.0; and Volkswagen Crafter 2.0.

That seems to include just about everybody except BMW, Mazda, PSA and Toyota. Must be nice for VW not to be all alone and to have only two VW badged vehicles on the list.

Emissions equipment doesn’t properly function at low/ambient temps. That is no secret, hence the cold start feature on a lot of cars that is designed to heat up the primary cats.

In the U.S., yes. The EPA does not fuck around with this stuff. Euro emissions standards and test procedures are so hilariously lax and so tilted in diesel’s favor that it’s going to be hard to prove that any of the automakers were actually “cheating” per se and not just stretching the rules to their limits.

Interestingly, Mercedes have been accused of the same thing in the US (ie dirtier when cold) so the EPA don’t seem to be as on the ball as you might think.

right now all there is to that is a class action suit started either by a law firm or some individual who has not yet been identified. I’d wait until some actual substantive information comes out before we start crucifying everyone.

and I wasn’t claiming the “EPA was on the ball” or anything (else they would have caught VW themselves) but that they will bring the hammer down on you if you violate.

edit: besides, all cars (petrol or diesel) are dirtier when the engine is cold; the catalysts need to reach a certain temperature before they’ll actually do their job. If, on the other hand, the accusation is that a fully warmed up Mercedes diesel will emit more in cold weather, then that’s another story entirely. but unless I’ve missed something we don’t yet have the information that would lead to that conclusion.

As much as I want that to be true (especially with BMW and Mazda which I like) it’s hard to believe.
