I just added this video to my previous post. This is what I wrote:

Just listen to this man play. And don’t just listen to the notes, but listen to the space between the notes. We might not have always agreed on his music, but there is genius here that transcends styles. His solo starts at 3:27. Weeping indeed.

How many classic rock fans do you think saw this and realized who was far and away the most talented person on the stage?

Nail on the head there.

I had the same thought while watching that. But you know what, Prince never upstaged them. He did a bit of what you would expect Prince to do, but he respected the place and the time. You look at his body of work, and you understand that for all that he was PRINCE, he also respected the history of where his music came from.

Yep. Prince could wail on just about any instrument better than anyone, but you wouldn’t know it unless you were paying attention. He always had impeccable taste which is so apparent when you listen to his earlier more straight-funk records. Just playing exactly what needs to be played exactly correctly. I guess there’s no need to upstage anyone when you’re playing everything yourself. The keyboard and guitar solo at the end of Purple Rain are underappreciated.

Just saw this quote and it seemed appropriate here. It was on Twitter, so I can’t vouch for it’s authenticity...

When Eric Clapton was asked how it felt to be the world’s best guitarist he replied: “I don’t know. Ask Prince”.
