I always wondered...Why do a lot of left leaning people who’d consider themselves “progressive” keep calling Trump “Drumpf?”

Is it because you use an ethnic-sounding name to mock him? That seems pretty racially insensitive.

Is it because you think he should go by Drumpf instead of identifying as Trump? That seems as insensitive as calling Catlyn Jenner “Bruce.”

Is it because you think he’s trying to make himself sound more appealing? Most reliable sources put the Drumpf-Trump switch around the 1600s if at all. This means that Trump has likely been his family name for more than 400 years, and that Donald himself didn’t change anything. Hell, my last name definitely did change less than 200 years ago, but I don’t think I should switch the name I’ve lived my life with back to old spellings and pronunciations.

This is an honest question I’ve wondered about for some time. Not trying to debate politics, but none of the Drumpf explanations I’ve heard make any sense.

My last name was also changed, but I really want to at least make the old one my middle name so I can wear it proudly. And considering he mocked Jon Stewart for changing his last name, claiming “he should be proud of his heritage,” Trump should be proud of the Drumpf name. It was his grandfather’s surname by birth.

Also, I don’t really ever call him Drumpf. Only on rare occasion do I use “Drumpf.”

Trump said Stewart “Should be proud of his heritage” after Jon named him Trump “Fuckface von Clownstick” on his show back in 2013.

Now I’m not here to defend the angry TV millionaire, or the angry real-estate billionaire, but I think it’s pretty clear Trump’s tweet was questioning Jon’s legitimacy for changing his name to be more palatable for TV audiences, and not about making fun of the name itself. Plus the discussion was about naming people anyway, so the “be proud of your heritage” remark was more sarcasm about the name change than anything.

The obvious differences here are twofold. First, outside of one tweet, Trump is still decent enough to call Jon what he identifies as; Jon Stewart. The same can’t be said for anyone who mocks Trump with Drumpf. Second, Stewart was actually named Leibowitz and made a decision to change it. The same can’t be said for Trump, whose last name has carried his family heritage for 400 years.

And yes, it has been 400 years. Since I assume you’re getting all of your information from John Oliver, the book he cited as proof that Drumpf was his family name puts the earliest known use of Trump in his family in 1608, and attributes the name change to the 30 Years War. Snopes looked into it and found the only claim real claim his grandfather changed the name, came from a short 2011 article in the International Business Times, and was completely speculative and un-sourced. All known documents from his grandfather were signed with Trump.

So yeah, again I’m not here to defend some billionaire who probably couldn’t care less, nor am I here to get people to vote for anyone. The Drumpf thing just always struck me as very hypocritical coming from such “tolerant” people, and I really don’t like misinformation in general.

Fair enough. I’m willing to admit I was wrong. I’m not getting all my information from John Oliver, though. I looked that part up.

I like to call myself more tame than some Bernie supporters. Even though I strongly disagree with the Republican candidates, I do acknowledge the parts of their speeches that I do agree with. I think Trunp should be allowed to change his views based on new facts or evidence. It’s Socratic, after all. I have attacked the candidates before, but it really isn’t me. On a good day I’m up for a calm political discussion, unfortunately there’s so much shit going on in my life right now that I don’t care how I approach arguments.

I’m not defending Trump necessarily, nor am I bashing Oliver, but that entire segment was pretty out of line and based on misinformation.
