In this photo provided by NASA and taken on April 12, 2016, an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! passes in front of the sun at supersonic speed, creating shockwaves that are caught photographically for use in aerodynamic research. NASA is using a modern version of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a 150-year-old German photography technique that helps researchers visualize supersonic flow phenomena using full-scale aircraft in flight. The results will be used to help engineers to design a quieter supersonic transport.

Schlieren photography is so cool, especially BOS. Looks like a bullet piercing the sun.

So glad you know about BOS! Several years ago I directed a wind tunnel test in which RBOS was one of the primary measurement techniques. You can see the lighter colored speckle panels on the far wall, left side of the picture. Super cool science, one of the neatest things I ever worked on!
