Reminiscing on my Childhood: Integrated Booster Seat Edition

The peak of my childhood: this is it.

In May 2006, my father purchased a vehicle like no other. Not only was it 84/800 of the Ocean Race Edition XC90's (more on that another time), but it had an integrated booster seat...

See, seven year old Jack thought this was the coolest thing there had ever been. Like, you pulled up the switch, and this seat came out of nowhere. When my father first demonstrated this technological marvel in the parking lot of Crown Volvo of Chapel Hill, NC, I was instantly memorized. It was pure witchcraft. Sexy, Swedish witchcraft.

I want it back.

My father liked it too, because he did not need to spend a whopping $30 on a Graco booster seat, when his $50,000 Scandinavian SUV came with one for free.

Over the next two years, my father, stepmother, and my younger half-brother traveled all over the state. Boone in spring. Wrightsville Beach in September. Nags Head for Christmas (that was weird).

My time on the integrated booster seat in that beast included some of the best memories I had as a child. But all good things must come to an end. With the birth of my second brother right around the corner, it was decided that a new, larger vehicle was needed.

So they bought a 2009 S60 T5, a vehicle I sadly spent little time in because my father moved his part of the family back to Seattle six months later. Confusingly, my father sold the XC90 in order to get a larger vehicle, as I have already noted. But the S60 was not a larger vehicle.

And worst of all, it did not have an integrated booster seat.

I have many automotive stories and anecdotes that I have amassed thoughout my time on this planet, and if there’s a demand, I’ll share more.

I know that ocean race edition ... I have a fleece pullover from the Around Alone campaign which was sponsored by Volvo. From the 90s ... and still keeps me warm.

My 850 has an integrated booster, as well. In a few years I’ll even be able to put it to use. Hopefully I don’t absent-mindedly sell it before then.

Japan is an astonishing country - 185 MPH bullet trains (Shinkansen) taxi drivers in white gloves, and delicious food. It was a life changing trip for me. I saw rarely seen Imperial gardens , tiny bars , and huge crossings , like in Lost in Translation (Shibuya) and Shinjuku as well. I would move there in a second.

I have fond memories of Dad’s 1976 LTD. No booster seats unless you count the fold out arm rest in the vinyl bench seats with metal branding irons built in.

My Dad had an ocean race edition too!, the integrated booster seat was awesome though, the car had transmission problems at about 90,000 miles because it was a gm transmission modified in Sweden and there was a huge waiting list. He sold it and bought an Acura Tsx wagon.

Do you remember what number it was? My father also didn’t like the blue contrast piping on the seats.

It was 165, I happened to like the contrast piping but I do not know what my Dad thought about them. He now has a bmw x3.

Ours was 84, and he now has an X5. I don’t like it, but I have only seen it once since he got it (I live in Raleigh, he lives in Seattle).

I actually saw our XC90 at Whole Foods last month, it’s in good shape other than the giant, “Don’t Tread on Me,” sticker on the rear window and a curbed wheel.
