This morning as I sit behind my computer still wondering why Turn 1 Tickets at COTA still haven’t gone on sale for the USGP, I began thinking of how much of a disappointment Lewis Hamilton is turning out to be this year.

At the end of the 2015 season, I noticed a decline in drive for him. Like yeah, he already won the wold championship in Austin, I guess it just makes sense to let Nico have the rest. But fast-forward to the 2016 season and it seems like the drive is gone to win. Hamilton’s personality is an acquired taste, that goes without saying. Most hate him for coming off as a huge douche, and people are valid in thinking that because, well, it’s true. When I first followed him on snapchat, I though, “Oh cool, maybe we’ll get to see some stuff from pit lane!”, and sure, sometimes that’s what we get to see, but 90% of the time its either waaaay too many snaps from a fashion show in Paris, or selfies of him shirtless getting a massage. Occasionally we’ll get too many snaps of his dogs, which I’m ok with. #blessed

And I get it, Lewis’ mingling with the social media world and celebrities has kind of brought a new light on F1 for the “outside” world. But maybe that shouldn’t be his primary focus here.

My point is though, Hamilton has been my favorite driver on the grid for the past couple years. Despite his off-track antics, the guy can drive. The car helps, but there’s no doubt he’s talented. Lately though, there just seems to be no more ambition to win. I honestly kind of enjoyed his pouting when he didn’t come first (Monaco 2015):

because at least it showed us there was a desire to be the best, even if it did involve some immature pouting. It seems to me he’s more interested in showing up on race weekend, getting some place on podium, then heading out to go snap some more fashion shows, or beaches. He’s always been an attention whore, but it’s turning into an attention seeking monster. I know we’re only 2 races into the season, but this has been my take-away.

Thoughts?

As much of a Mercedes Petronas fan I am, Vettel is slowly becoming my preferred driver....

Yes, but not turn one.

I was just told by COTA that they can’t start selling T1 tickets until they get blueprints for the new grandstand they’re building

Not that it was the start of his douchedom, but I’m pretty sure I can pinpoint the start of some relationships that led to this downfall...

I will say, COTA has the best twitter account around. Super quick with responses too.

My God... I’ve seen the one with Kris Jenner, but never with both Kanye and Kim. It all makes sense now.

He needs to get that start down, because it seems (so far) whichever Mercedes gets through turn 1 first will win the race. He’s still a beast in quali, but needs to get to T1 first.

With the 5-place grid penalty this weekend, it’s looking like it’s Nico’s race to lose.

Now, his social media presence? Hilarious. It’s right up there with Beiber/Mayweather/Kardashian levels of ego and the need for attention. If you have ever read replies to any of his social media posts, it’s amazing. “follow meeee pleeeeease!” “LOVE YOU” “GO get them champ!!!111” He even tweeted some dead hyperlinks once, and his fans blindly liked and Rewteeted that shit 100 times. It’s amazing.

While he may not be leading in the points, his ego is currently the world fuckin’ champion.

I first started watching F1 after Lewis appeared on Top Gear just after the ‘07 season. I got really into the 2008 season, quickly gravitated toward Hamilton and his team, and I’ve been a huge Mclaren fan ever since. I actually had a huge banner poster of Hamilton and Kovalinen printed to put in my dorm room in college.

In my eyes, my fondness for Hamilton began to dwindle in the 2011 season, where his celebrity really exploded, his driving suffered as a result, and he made incredible excuses about how he was being singled out for on-track altercations.

When he’s on, I respect his driving ability immensely, and I still think he’s one of the top-3 racers on the grid (with Vettel and Ricciardo).

However, I now think (sadly) he’s a douche, and I probably wont ever be a true fan.

Doesn’t even really have all that far to go before they’ve made another Caitlyn. He’s pretty much almost to ladyboy already.

Not a big fan of Hamilton, but I would not go anywhere near saying he’s a douche. That said I think he is extremely talented driver. While the end of last year I would tend to agree he seemed to just give up after securing the championship, this year has been much more of a case of bad luck. Penalties that put him down field, damaged cars, reliability issues. Honestly if he is satisfied with 3 world championships it could be that he is now just collecting the pay checks and enjoying where he is. However until his luck turns around too hard to say.
