Excluding repetition, is there any other secret behind learning to Heel-Toe? I can do 4th to 3rd easily, but not quickly, but 3rd to 2nd I’m finding difficult.
I have tomorrow off so I’m going to use the empty school lot to practice

When rolling to a stop, put the car in neutral and practice the heel tap. You won’t have to worry about the transmission feeling all jerky because you’re practicing without the car in gear.
The car won’t be in gear and you will get used to how quickly (or slowly) your car revs. Once you have that down, when going from third to second, pull the shifter towards you, diagonally down after you have blipped the throttle.
But mostly get used to how quickly or slowly your car revs. Put the car in neutral and get used to it!

I don’t think so. Learning to rev-match on upshifts will help. If you can do that, heel-and-toe is just a more complicated technique to apply the same thing to a down-shift.
As for practise I did it during normal driving. While coasting towards a roundabout or corner on an empty road, when it didn’t matter so much if I messed up my braking a little. Easier than making dedicated trips to an empty parking lot.

Some cars are easier than others...I could heel-toe my Mustang (into a crowd of innocent bystanders) pretty easily. My Fit and Viper are much tougher...it always ends up herky jerky because I have a hard time maintaining the same pressure on the brake pedal while hitting the gas pedal.

This. I had to get used to rolling my ankle while coasting to a stop.
Rev matching is probably the first thing he should learn from a stop. If he can “catch” the shift, he’ll get it down sooner.

Master rev matching as you coast first before you try it with the added complexity of braking. Then try blipping the throttle while in neutral and braking, to learn to keep your brake pressure steady. Then add the two and bam!

well in all fairness the lot is 20 feet up from my house. I practice on roads when i go to and from work as well

My observations:
Keeping the orientation of your foot straight and position of your foot on the brake pedal is very important.
Also, I find that actually applying the brakes hard enough to put the brake pedal at (or lower than) the level of the gas pedal will help transition. Simply putting around while doing light brake pedal work just isn’t the same.
Of course, this means trying it at higher speeds (like in the braking zone before corner entry on a racetrack) and lots of things can go wrong, especially on public roads.

Wait till you try 2 to 1 lol.
First step I think is learning the gear ratios. You can do this practically anytime while driving. When downshifting, just clutch in, while shifting you blip the throttle and then put it in gear without braking. Or just observe how far the revs change while up shifting, that sort of thing.

I agree. My MR2's pedals are very very close. My old 300ZX were far apart, very different foot action.

In my car, the brake pedal is much higher than the accelerator. Really, the only way I could perform a heel & toe downshift would be to jam the brake pedal HARD. But that’s not how I drive on public roads. So I don’t.
Instead, I just do rev-match downshifts. I blip the accelerator a little to facilitate gear engagement and smooth out my driving. And honestly, that’s good enough for me.
Are all cars like that? Does heel & toe always demand hard braking? I guess it makes sense in the context of racing, where you’re slamming on the brakes before turning a corner...

I've never been able to heel toe with the Si. It feels awkward probably from the floor mounted throttle.

Not to my knowledge. There is just no pedal travel. I can tap my brakes and come to a halt

the right shoes. obviously big clunky shoes are hard to heel toe in, boots up your ankles are hard too, and the soles on my winter shoes have too much grip to pivot on the pedal.
very much enjoying the video. a nice clean and simple R, very tasteful.

lol “bang for buck” argument was fail. If it were an Integra GSR I’d agree, but for the type r the prices are way to high. Worth it still, but bang for your buck you can do way better than a type R
