I dig the body colored gloss plastic accents. Reminds me of the Chevy SSR or the Chevy Spark. Honestly the whole car is a pleasant surprise. I really like the enormous sunroof.

I find it funny that VW can get away with hard, thin, gloss black plastic but nobody else can.

You know what else had them?

Yeah VW puts plasticy crap inside “OoOoOoOo look at the nice shiny plastic” GM or Ford does “Blech, cheap plasticy interior...”

I guess it’s the solidity of that material, as well as the other plastics surrounding it.

You can say that’s possible. But there is a massive double standard when it comes to interior quality US vs German. The Germans get a way with a lot of crap and no one calls them on it.

VW, good quality looking crap with a lot of engineering in all the places except where it matters.

Huh? Were those an option? My mom’s ‘05 GT had glossy plastic but it wasn’t body colored.

I love the gloss piano black plastic accents in the Buick Regal GS, for what it’s worth. Very classy.

I’ve sat it a red one (had red interior accents instead of black). Really looked good! But no vase holder? C’mon VW, WTF?!?!

I disagree. When the textures and colours contribute rather than detract from the interior theme, it’s well-executed and hard materials are acceptable. Fine details such as thin accents and well-thought-out shapes are also important. In this Beetle interior, check out the delicate brushed accenting around the steering wheel buttons and the air outlets. The thin line is repeated on the door grab when it would have been cheaper to have one larger piece of silver plastic. The cute concave dimple on the convex glove box push-latch, when a flat piece would have been far cheaper.

Similarly, an interior can have all the soft-touch materials in the world, but if they are rubbery, coarse in texture, disproportionate in size, and do not contribute to design, then materials cannot save that interior. A giant slab of leather or chromed plastic does not say much without purpose in the shape and consistency in the texture.

Europeans have a cultural pride in design and craftsmanship that is lost on many American buyers who see quantities of “chrome” or “soft padding” as tick boxes on a checklist.

I would never touch VW ownership with a pole, but I cannot deny that their interiors are on point for a non-luxury brand.

I don’t think you could get every body color, but with certain ones they were coordinated. my sister had a purple PT which had purple dash inserts. When they “refreshed” the interior for 2006 the color-keyed inserts went away.

And that’s fine, but in a Buick it’s “cheap” and in a VW it’s “classy”. Or, so it seems most people perceive it.

Just saying, it seems like a double standard. And while your points may be on the mark for the Beetle, the 2.5 Golf my sister has only has a little of this stuff, but it just looks and feels cheap and out of place. But you never hear anybody complain about it...

But if it’s anything like the gloss plastic they stuck in the Golf, it’s not a solid feel, so...

Personally, I don’t care. It’s just the double standard that strikes me funny

Maybe it is the angle, but that looks super cramped and I’m short. Otherwise dig the layout/display.

Well, usually that’s not the case though.

Germans have been making consistently good interiors for years, while American cars have been plagued with crap ones since the early 90's.

It’s the angle, and also the seat is way forward because I’m short as hell. It’s a stupid roomy interior in person.
