Buy a well maintained 1974 Ingersoll Rand 3HP 150ltr compressor for £250.00, or buy a new compressor with the same spec and a 2 year warranty from a less reputable company for £380.00?

Depends on the warranty.

Er, just checked their website which no longer exists(!), so assume Parts & Labour, Return to Shop.
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

Well, since the old one is still running, it stands to reason that it will continue to for a while longer.

Both exactly the same with single phase 3HP, 14CFM and 10bar.

Before you buy the old one check very thoroughly for rust on the tank. Drain the tank of condensation and make sure it’s clear and not rusty. Old tanks like to rust from the inside out and when the blow it’s like a bomb going off.

Was just about to say this^. I would have to be able to see inside it before I put it in my garage.

Will do. The guy selling it is the same bloke who has been servicing it for the last ten years, Mr. ACS as per the sticker, so I’d hope he knows what he’s doing.

It can, provided there is frequent and adequate maintenance.

Any difference on how loud they are? I hate being deafened when the compressor kicks on.

If I know anything about anything I know Ingersoll Rand doesn’t fuck around when it comes to air compressors. They are the shit. They are what every shop wants to have.
I haven’t even heard of Wolf air.

I don’t know about the Wolf unit, although I’m told the Ingersoll Rand is a fairly quiet machine and was recommended over two other units for sale because of this reason.

See if you can check the old tank for rust.

Then I’d be tempted to go with the IR if, like others have mentioned, the tank checks out.

You echo my sentiments with IR, any big jobsite I've been on seems to have IR trailer compressors. Likewise with Wolf Air, but they seem fairly ubiquitous and have had a middling to good reception when it comes to bang for buck.

As it’s on Gumtree I will have to go and collect the thing anyway, so can check everything is A OK before I commit to buying it. What else should I look for? Obviously that the tank fills and the motor doesnt chatter or squeal, but I’m a large compressor novice so any advice is helpful.

They don't make them like they used to and the IR is made better than most. This is a no brainier.

Get the old IR, it’ll still outlast the new one.

Old one. You can rebuild if nessasary. Only worry would be rust in the tank. Get an endoscope and check it out.

Same as most of the others. Go IR, it has cast iron cylinders and will be quieter.

We’ve got a 70's vintage IR at work. Runs like a top. Go with the Ingersoll.

Can you rebuild the old one? I would buy the old one if it could be rebuilt parts are available and it still works perfect.
