picked up this sweet little 2006 Z4M for a long weekend cruise from LA, through santa barbara wine country, up pch, through big sur, carmel and monterrey, and then back down through the center of the state (avoiding i5).
she (correctly) wanted a convertible for the trip. but one must really pack light for 4-5 days in this tiny thing. getting the trunk and storage bins set to drive was like a game of tetris, as we added various bottles of wine and knick knacks along the way.
while every other car driving up or down 1 was a mustang or camarao convertible, we felt special in this little six speed.
it has the engine from the e46 m3, and it sounds a charm, but i think i was expecting it to have a little more torque. with around 330 hp (if i’m remembering correctly) i thought it would feel a little more powerful than it did. makes me think an m3 would even feel sluggish with its added weight.
that said, for winding around the cliffs of pch at 6k, it was more than a blast...
17 mile drive. (this trip followed by a cocktail outside at the pebble beach lodge overlooking the 18th green, where we know what will happen in august)
somewhere in the middle of the state.
in memoriam...
some of the less traveled roads in the state.
and a few of our bovine friends for good measure.
anyway, great trip, great car. D: if you happen to read this, thanks for the ride! hopefully i’ll be able to make it again someday.

Beautiful pictures, and very inspiring for someone like myself who is looking to do more road trips. Thanks for sharing!

preferably a paper map... with the local roads.
this car (thankfully) had no nav. those things are always trying to put you back on the big crowded boring roads and highways.

international travel is amazing, but there’s also a lot to see here in the US if you just take the time to look.

used to be relayrides
its amazing for us folks who want nothing less than the v6 mustang enterprise special.
from there i’ve rented a turbo mazdaspeed miata, a 335i, a 650i convertible, and this. (the bmws tend to be the best value for fun cars)

yeah... i’ve rented 4 times from them. (i think its been 4) it’s been fairly seemless.
works best in 1st tier metro areas. in philly, people are expecting you to pay $150 for a day with their 4 cylinder 3 series. huh?

I’ve used them once. I wish I had used them more often.
It depends on the market/city. If thats the price people are offering and no one is giving you a lower price, thats how much renting a 5 yo BMW 4 banger costs...
Once the guys start realizing no ones gonna pay that or if someone else drops their price, then everyone else does that to compete.
