While reading Raphael’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this came to mind. Thought I’d repost.

Pete Geoghegan’s Mustang GTA. 89 wins from 144 race starts. Second most winningest car in Australian Touring car history, but many of the wins were most significant.

“To squeeze the chunky 15" x 8" American Racing Wheels and fat Firestone rubber inside the standard wheel arches, Sheppard shorted the top A-arms slightly, which also produced the required dose of negative camber.”

This is a completely different means of getting rid of the understeer than the Shelby drop. Do you know if his class required stock suspension mount points, or would a Shelby drop with a little less of a tweak have been better? The stock geometry actually crabs the top of the wheel out under compression, which the Shelby drop helps with, and brings some tilt back under extension - while this setup works, no doubt, he’s got one whole tire he’s not using.

I’ve done a Shelby drop on my Ranchero’s front, and that makes a 6" wheel fit pretty well - with more of an offset I could get a 7" in there no problem, but I guess the 8" requires tilt if you’re going to have a tight enough turning circle...

I can only guess it was ruled that suspension points would need to be stock, but I don’t know. The three wheels thing got me thinking...

If the one front tire could hold up just as well as the two rears, this would be a moot point. The setup of the whole car and its layout could have meant it was in a state of oversteer most of the time. Chance he was steering with his right foot just as much the wheel.

Another interesting choice is that he’s not using a Shelby/TransAm series style front valance with the open “notch” in it below the bumper. There is no way he wasn’t running a little warm, though it looks a bit like he borrowed a wider radiator from something later on. Combining those two things, the funky suspension and the limited airflow, and I think it’s pretty clear he was forging his own path and paying absolutely no attention to the rest of the Mustang-running field.
