I put mothballs in my Camaro over the winter. While I now know this is a mixed success and horrible thing to do, I did. My grandpa has always done this and I didn’t know better. I previously borrowed one of his cars and after a week with a fan in it and charcoal and kitty litter moving it in the sun when possibly it went away.
My Camaro is not giving me so much luck. Mothballs were in it 10 years less than the other car but it seems to be way worse. Because I park it in a parking garage now I can’t leave it in the sun or leave the windows open. Currently I have some kitty litter on plates, charcoal, and baking soda. Today I put a couple dryer sheets in it but I think that will just mask it.
What has been successful to remove it not using sitting out in the sun? I am considering an Ozone Generator but some gov’t agencies say they are not useful and bad. If Ozone generators do work I’ll be looking to borrow one or buy if I have to.

1. Don’t listen to old people
2. Febreeze bomb everything (Trust me I’m not qualified)

1. Lesson learned. Should not have had to learn but now I know.
2. I am sure mothballs will outlast Febreze. I am also not an expert.

Ozone generators aren’t useful as air purifiers in occupied spaces. For them to do what they do the Ozone needs to be at a high level, beyond safe exposure limits, in a sealed environment.
If you have access to one go for it. Just don’t sit in the car with it.

Ya my plan was: Put it in garage and turn it on with plug on non garage side of the door. Let it run for X hours and unplug. Open garage door with remote and air garage for a few hours before going in.

Thanks, I’ll let the stuff I have in there set with the windows cracked for awhile and start to look for a generator and somewhere to use it.

Ozone. Go to a local grow store and get one. Seal it up and let her rip.

I’m convinced that you only have to put a single take-out pizza in a car to ruin it’s smell forever. Worth a try.

Ozone generator got the smokers smell out of a used car I bought once.

Haha I actually have a no takeout pizza in my car policy. That stuff sticks around. But is better than mothballs. . .

I’d rather have a wiff of mothballs than mouse shit and piss everywhere

I’ve had petty good experience with ozone generators. Mercedes actually recommends them for bad interior smells.

Agreed, but the scent really sticks to me. Also prefer mothball smell over chewed up seats and wires.

Thanks for that bit of info. I am on the hunt for one and more difficult right now is a place to do it.

Next time you put it in storage, use dryer sheets instead of mothballs. Mice hate that smell too.

We have an Ozone machine at work. Run it with the AC on recalculation and it has worked wonders after the interior has been cleaned too.
