Finally getting around to showing off my newest acquisition, a 1979 Porsche 924. I picked this up last weekend for $1300 and I’m pretty happy with it so far. Admittedly I might have paid a little too much as I’ve found a few more issues that I missed during inspection. Overall it’s a good car, it runs good, and drives straight as an arrow, but it has a bad case of the “high schoolers”. There’s quite a bit of questionable work and shoddy repairs done throughout the car. Most of it is stuff I can handle though and I’ve been plucking away at it for the past week to get it into somewhat acceptable shape.
The first main issue I found is the battery tray, which is right over the passenger foot well. It tends to rust out on these and leaks water into the passenger foot well. I knew this going in, and it looked solid, as did the rest of the car, so I didn’t look extremely close. Only after I found wet carpet did I look a bit closer and discover that the tray had indeed rusted out, and was repaired with fiberglass. I don’t really have the means to fix this the “right way” but for now, at least to stop the leaking I’ve covered the spotty fiberglass with Flex-Seal.
As you can see from the pictures the outside is a little rough, the paint job is crappy and has over spray everywhere, but it looks decent from a distance and I might paint it anyway. I’ll for sure pop out some of those dents, and clear off the rust and try to match the color as close as I can. I’m going to repaint some of the window trim as well which should really help to make it look a little nicer.
The most glaring problem with this car is the interior. On top of the years of use and typical 70's Vinyl, one of the previous owners decided to crudely cut holes in the door for some Walmart special speakers, and they decided to wire them with a combination of speaker wiring, and apparently whatever random wiring they had laying around. Luckily the local junk yard has a pretty fresh 924 (with brown interior) and a 944 (with black) so I should be able to get some good replacements to get the interior better sorted. I’ve already hit it with some soap and water and it’s already cleaning up nice.
There’s a whole list of other little things here and there throughout the car. Nothing I cant handle though so this should be a good little project to tinker with as I drive.
Edit: I accidentally posted this on LaLD at first, so I moved it over here.

Always nice to see a rolling project. These are typically what I call the ‘therapy cases’. You have a decent amount of things that need to be fixed, but nothing that’ll cause severe headaches and/or break your wallet. Its just enough to keep your focus on the car and keep yourself busy without losing your cool, sort of speak...
Good buy, I hope you have a lot of fun with it...:)

Awesome man! I love reading about this kind of newly bought cars that need love! Restoring a car on a budget is what I love :)
So you’re plannning a full interior swap withe the brown one you’ve seen or swap as much interior parts as possible with the black 944?

Nice work! I really like these early 924's. Hopefully you can undo the “high school” on this one.

Looks good! Hopefully you get some good use out of it. I would have ended up racing it in a field with my friends!

It hurts my heart every time I remember that I hacked two 6.5" speakers into my Firebird’s center console kinda like this:
But seeing that what I did was not original and LOTS of them got hacked up (this was before the internet and I had no idea it had been done before), I don’t feel AS bad.

No haha, just the things that I cant fully repair right now and dump water into the car if I leave it the way it is.

I’m hoping to get as much as I can from the black interior 944. I haven’t had time to give it a really good look over because parts were piled all over the interior and rear, but it looks decent from what I can tell. The brown 924 interior is in really good shape though so I’m debating a swap if I can’t get most of what I need from the 944. The biggest thing I really need is a drivers seat. The 944 has a good condition, black, passenger seat, that wouldn’t fully match, and the 924 has both seats in very good condition, but they’re a dark greenish color. I’m still deciding what to do there.
Or maybe I’ll just take whatever parts I need from whichever car has them in better shape and have a multi color interior lol. Honestly I think the right combination of brown and black could look decent. We did something similar with my buddies old Ford truck using the best junkyard parts we would find. It’s got a white dash/doors, with red dash pad/door cards, green carpet, and a blue seat.

That’s not too bad actually. I still prefer it original, but at least it blends in a little.

Thanks! So long as nothing major goes wrong it should be a cheap little car. And if something major does go wrong... engine swap!

Thanks, I like my vehicles to stand out a little, except for my motorcycles, which are both black haha.

It leaves a huge gaping hole on either side of an otherwise nice console though.... but then again the only other option for front speakers is the single 4X10 under the center of the dash.

I’ve got some in an envelope as soon as it warms up! I’ll have to order another one for the vehicle I robbed it from though.

That’s true, unless you leave the speakers in. I plan on building some simple boxes for mine and putting the speakers right behind the front seats, because the back seats are useless anyway. There’s also a good cavity in the trunk that I’ll put a little 8" sub in as well.

Well if I were going for concours restoration vs. daily driver.... I’m glad the console for my TA isn’t hacked up, although it is far from show car condition.

How goes it on the 924? It’s been over two weeks since your post! Are you done fixing it up yet? ;-)

It’s coming along. Since I’ve posted this I’ve got a few things fixed on it, and it’s definitely in a tinker with it as I drive stage. I’ve;
Fixed the busted brake line
Solved the issue where my door would randomly unlatch ($0.89 spring)
Got the clock working
Got the hatch to latch (one side wasn’t latching)
Removed a bunch of crappy wiring
Replaced the busted taillight
Pulled apart, cleaned, and resealed the “Porsche” center taillight. Added LED lights as back light (it looks awesome)
Added the arm rest to the passenger door. Door pockets and door handle trim bucket things to both doors.
Fixed the roll up cover in the hatch.
A bunch of fresh gas
Found a few missing pieces of carpet, and a carpet dash cover.
I’m hoping to pull a new seat and a new bumper this weekend. There’s a couple good ones in the local pick’n’pull (Ewe Pull It as they call it) and so long as I can get them out they’re crazy cheap compared to any other replacements. So far I’ve been able to find all of the parts listed above (minus the spring) at the junk yard and it’s saved me a ton of money. It’s finally been warming up around here too so I might try and paint some trim this weekend.
