Kinja'd!!!

I was browsing around Getaround and Turo tonight and thinking: Who actually lets someone else drive their F-Type or 911?

Is this the kind of person who simply can’t afford an F-Type but rents it to pay for it then simply keeps it in the end?

I don’t know, but I couldn’t do it. I’m way too anal. I’d be afraid it would come back with door dings, less tire life, stains, etc. Although you’d probably be insured there’s a deductible, and just the hassle alone wouldn’t be worth it.

People beg all the time but NOPE. I shamelessly borrow my Dad’s cars though.

I let enthusiasts drive my FiST all the time. But I refuse to let anyone who doesn’t regularly autocross drive it. I’d rather you three-wheel it taking a right on the streets than drive like most non-enthusiasts drive (read: on your phone, no turn signals, drifting out of the lane, and in general violating all the rules of the road at once)

NOPE!

I'm more anally retentive than an OCD binge cheese eater at a colonoscopist's office about my car. Borrowing means fucking with my radio settings, eating in it, getting door dings, making a mess of the interior, putting regular instead of premium in the gas tank, boinking in it, and the biggest risk of all, wrecking or getting into an accident and jacking up the insurance rates for the future. Too many risks, no rewards, you need a ride, get a rental car.

Surely there’s a middle ground between “vapid apathy” and “regularly tracks their car”

The only car person I’ve dated was also the only person who very willingly shared his vehicle. I’m pretty generous with mine (or I would be, if they could drive it) and I’ve volunteered to teach folks in it but I’m not comfortable driving others’ cars.

Wife’s R500, occasionally.

E430, yeah, that’s pretty much what it’s for, I haven’t seen it in at least a few weeks since my sister in law has been using it and when she isn’t using it my wife’s best friend uses it.

E55, only the wife if the other cars are out and it’s an absolute necessity, or my apprentice at work if I’m making him wash it. But I would let just about all of my co-workers drive it if they really wanted or needed to.

I could see people like my uncle using it. He’s a car guy and owns several (they used to be cool ones, but now his fleet is boring), but he’s out of town for 2/3 of the year and they just sit. Might as well make some money off of them.

Oh. Well I wouldn’t recommend learning on the Celica. The clutch engages at the bottom of the damn floor. An old pickup is good because at that point the shifts are so sloppy. And if you can drive a beater you can drive most things.

Yes. Autocross. Go to one. Learn how big a car is, where your wheels are, how to move the wheel smoothly, etc......Like I said, my complaint is how regularly I see people in my area go the wrong way down one ways, drift out of lanes, and in general have a lot of bad behaviors that events like an autocross or even driving schools like the tire rack street survival school would knock out of you.

I mean I wouldn’t if I had an F-Type or 911. But I’ve always let significant others drive my car when they needed to or it was convenient. I am particular about my cars and all, but there’s also more to life and its not always worth worrying about.

My car is “shared” with my brother but he barely uses it. I don’t let people use my car unless it’s a road trip where I’m too tired or done with driving.

As a rule, no. I come from a family where everyone has a car and there isn't much playing of musical cars, except my dad always kept a pickup around if anyone needed it or their respective vehicle was getting service. My wife's family is the exact opposite. Drives me nuts. Even swapping cars with my wife so I can take hers for service is annoying. We're the same height, but she is all leg (hubba hubba) and I am not, so it takes a while to get the seat right. Plus my V8 Jeep is quick on the go pedal and slow on the stop pedal (less so since I put on new calipers and rotors) and her Kia is the exact opposite, so that scares me.

I’ll let anyone I know use my car. Granted it’s a Renegade Sport 1.4T/6M, and before that it was a Soul base model 1.6/6m. Most people I know can drive a stickshift pretty well and those who don’t can learn with me — in my father-in-law’s 200k mile Mazda pickup. Kidding, of course, but he lets me use it to take trash to the dump.

But I would do that if I had an 850 FICO and 0-deductible insurance. Rent out a 911 Cabrio? Sure why not?

I’ve let a couple of people (who I trust) drive it while I closely observe from the passenger seat.

Idk if you would call that “sharing” or not.

For those people, it certainly can help with the payments. If I were to lease a car, I'd definitely consider renting it out, but if it's mine and paid for, I wouldn't even consider sharing it.

Again, surely there is a middle ground between going the wrong way down a street, and regularly taking your car to a competitive event and beating the shit out of it.

And again, autocross or other such driving events. You don’t need to set your brakes on fire at them, and many people are there just to learn how to drive better, but *to drive my car* that’s what I prefer to see and will pretty readily hand out the keys for.

I learned with Turo, what some of the people are doing is buying salvage titled “cool cars” renting them out for a couple of years, and then selling them. They aren’t the persons personal car, just a way to make money.

That’s super interesting. I suppose salvage is a way to get a big discount and I guess Turo never really asks.
